Message from SC DHEC
As winter has officially begun and an unusually cold weather system will begin moving into our state this week. SC DHEC would like to provide some key safety tips and resources for you. At this time, the system is not expected to bring significant snow or ice, but it will bring high winds and very cold temperatures that may cause a variety of safety hazards.

  • Review tips from the Red Cross to prevent frozen pipes. The Red Cross has additional information on preparing for a Winter Storm such as emergency kits, protecting pets and protecting your home and family.
  • HealthChildren.org provides information to keep children safe in the cold, such as protecting them from frost bite and hypothermia.
  • The Farmer’s Almanac has 11 safety tips including a reminder to be a good neighbor and check in with elderly or disabled relatives and neighbors to ensure they are safe.
  • The Cleveland Clinic provides an article on how cold weather can spell trouble for our hearts and lungs. This could be important as our bodies are not accustomed to the temperatures we are about to experience.

Wind chill advisories may be issued beginning Friday and into late Saturday. These weather conditions can cause frozen pipes, power outages, increased risk for house fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and cold stress on the body – increasing risks for heart attack.

Holiday Public Safety Message and Tips
The Holidays are approaching, which entails extensive shopping for most. Online shopping during the holiday season or at any time of year-should always be done with caution. According to research conducted by the Nebraska Department of Justice, there was a total of 59,177 scams reported in the state of South Carolina last year. We encourage all residents to be proactive and become familiarized with the following tips below to protect yourself:

  • Keep ALL software up-to-date.
  • Utilize strong passwords.
  • Make sure your internet connection is secure.
  • Customize and use privacy settings when using social media.
  • ALWAYS make sure your Internet connection is secure. Most public Wi-Fi is not. Refrain from making an online purchase while connected to public Wi-Fi.
  • Use a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your browsing information.
  • Only make online purchases from secure websites.
  • Customize and use privacy settings on all social media platforms.
  • Identify and block nuisance calls manually or automatically.
  • Be wary of requests to update or confirm your personal information.
  • Do not open attachments from unknown senders or click on links in emails/strange text messages in which personal information is requested.

For more safety tips on protecting yourself and your identity this holiday season, please email TOKI’s Director of Public Safety, Dr. Craig Harris, at charris@kiawahisland.org.
