New CARB Regulation “Omnibus Low-NOx Rule”
|
|
The California Air Resources Board has passed a new emission standard for HD trucks, the “Omnibus Low-NOx Rule”. This new rule would require trucks sold starting in 2024 to have NOx emissions 75% below the current standard, and 90% below by 2027. The regulation also includes a mandatory 50% reduction in PM, tougher standards for engines during low-load and idling, new in-use testing requirements and extended deterioration and warranty requirements. The Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association has stated that these requirements are not technically feasible. The Omnibus Low-NOx Rule would go into effect at the same time as the recently passed “Advanced Clean Truck” regulations that will mandate that fleets begin implementing zero-emission MD & HD vehicles.
