Word from the Pastor:
Awake Together
Then he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.” And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.” Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”.—Matthew 26:38-41 NRSV
The Garden of Gethsemane is a familiar scene for Christians who have read the Gospels and the chapters on Jesus’ final days before his execution. Luke tells us that as he anguished in prayer before the Father, he was so racked with anxiety and torment, his sweat became as drops of blood (Luke 22:44). In short, we are aware of Jesus’ testing; awed, even. His passion inspires artistic reflection, and it captures our imagination.
Yet in that same scene, we tend to overlook how his disciples failed their own test that night, hours before their master was taken away. He asked them to stay awake for a little. Pay attention! Be emotionally available as I’m preparing myself to die! This and more must have been going through Jesus’ heart and mind as he came back and saw his close friends asleep, unwilling to walk alongside him in his hour of need.
Now, none of us are Peter, James, or John, but we have those same tendencies. COVID and all the craziness we’ve been through has left us exhausted. Easter 2021 seems a mirage far out there on the calendar. Who has time to commit to devotionals, prayer, Scripture reading, small group, family, or home group time in the midst of our overwhelmed lives?
“Stay awake with me,” Jesus asks. I’m asking the same. Please, don’t let the 2021 Lenten season pass you by without carving time to stay awake and prepare yourself to grow in relationship with the Lord. Pick that devotional up. Join a home group gathering. If you have to remain virtual, join me on Friday night at 7:00 for virtual prayer meetings and home group review. Take time to pray and read the Word of God.
Stay awake with him. The hour is close at hand.
In Christ,
Pastor Sam

Lent Invites Us In
This Sunday, February 21, is the first in the season of Lent, the seven weeks of the church year preceding Easter. Recalling Jesus’ 40-day temptation in the wilderness, Lent invites us through introspection and penitence to consider the costliness of Christ’s sacrifice for our sin. Lenten worship is hence more subdued, signified by the purple liturgical color as well as by the temporary absence of flowers and alleluias. Be sure to pick up your copy of our Lenten Devotional outside the Fellowship Hall or sanctuary. If you prefer, contact the church office, and we will mail a copy to you.

Under Construction
Just as a heads-up to everyone, we are in the process of padding the pews in the sanctuary. We hope to have the job finished by Sunday, but if it’s still in progress, please excuse the mess as we move into the next phase of our sanctuary project.

Sam Is Writing
Sam will be on campus and working intermittently for the next two weeks. A draft of his doctoral project is due March 1, so a lot of his time and energy will be spent meeting that deadline. He will be available in an emergency; just call the office.

Home Groups Return
FPC Home Groups are starting back up with Lent. Home Groups are just what they sound like: people getting together in homes (or online) for fellowship and study, using age-appropriate material supplied weekly by church staff.
Home Groups are an innovative way to continue weekly fellowship and Bible study while staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. A Home Group can be a gathering of friends, neighbors, or one or more families. We provide an intergenerational Bible study each week to each group, and the Sunday sermon reflects on its theme. If you’re not already in a Home Group, go to our Home Groups webpage, register yourself or start a group, and let us know.
If you have questions, please reach out to Dave Welch, Katie Arnold, or Lilly Osborne for answers. Meanwhile, watch for Home Groups updates in Windows and on the FPC Bristol webpage. / Dave Welch

Organist’s Footnotes
“Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort” (“Keep us, Lord, faithful to your word”) is a Lutheran hymn by Martin Luther, with additional stanzas by Justus Jonas, first published in 1542. It was used in several musical settings, including the chorale cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach, Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort, BWV 126. It is also the tune on which the Lenten hymn “The Glory of These Forty Days” is commonly sung. On Sunday I will play three different settings by three Baroque composers, Johann Christoph Pachelbel (at left; 1653–1706), Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), and Johann Gottfried Walther (1684–1748).

We Are Praying Together
We are asking all members of our congregation to join our 7-12-7 Prayer Campaign. Please choose the time convenient for you (7:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., or 7:00 p.m.) and join us daily in prayer. Together we will ask for God’s guidance, deliverance, and mercy for our church, community, nation, and world. If you cannot pray at those hours, please pray when you can! We are facing great challenges, but God is greater still.
