Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo and doctoral students Darcey Altschwager, Matt Blomberg and Shola Aromona co-authored a research paper on digital experiences of marginalized women that has been accepted for publication in the journal New Media & Society. Entitled “Returning to the digital world: Digital technology use and privacy management of women transitioning from incarceration,” the paper examines technology and privacy perspectives of women recently released from incarceration. The other co-authors on the paper are Professors Hannah Britton and Megha Ramaswamy and research associates Bernard Schuster, Marilyn Ault and Joi Wickliffe at KU.
The Center for Undergraduate Research is taking applications for the Spring 2021 UGRA competition. The deadline for student proposals is Oct. 29. Online guidance and individual virtual advising appointments are available to help students prepare strong applications. More information here.
The University Scholarly Achievement Awards, which recognize mid-career faculty members at KU, are now open for nominations. The awards cover all fields of scholarship including arts, humanities, architecture and design, music, mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, medicine, clinical science, pharmacy, social sciences, social welfare, education, journalism, law and business. The Kansas Scholastic Press Association wants to showcase what makes KU a great place to be a journalist and communicator, and is looking for speakers for its fall virtual conference. Join this all-star team of presenters: Genelle Belmas, Lisa McLendon, Gerri Berendzen, Steve Rottinghaus, Peter Bobkowski, Pan Liu, Doug Ward, Heather Lawrenz, Christopher Heady, Himée Kamatuka and Eric Thomas. Speakers should submit a 20-minute recorded presentation on a topic that would be valuable to high school journalists: anything from broadcast to social media to writing leads to researching issues. If you are interested, email the KSPA staff at staff@kspaonline.org. They will send you more detailed instructions on what to do next. Deadline for presentations is today.

The next KU Ad Club meeting is Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. with guest speaker Victoria Baldwin, a creative strategist at Snap Inc. and 2014 J-School graduate. She leads strategic conversations with brands and agencies to identify innovative ways to advertise through augmented reality and visual storytelling. Prior to joining Snap, she was the director of influencer marketing and social strategy at a sports and entertainment marketing agency. ACES scholarships: Applications are now being accepted for scholarships through the ACES Education Fund, which awards six scholarships annually. ACES: The Society for Editing is the nation’s leading organization of editing professionals, educators and students. Learn more and apply here.
The Reynolds Journalism Institute’s 2020-21 Student Innovation Competition at the Missouri School of Journalism invites college students to participate by tackling engagement with a news organization. A student or student team will partner with a news organization to devise an engagement idea innovative to that organization. Applications detailing the team’s idea are due by Oct. 31. The chosen finalist teams will implement their idea at the partner news organization for three months before presenting the results on Feb. 26, 2021, in front of judges and the public on Zoom. First-place prize is $10,000. More details here.
The NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists invites students to attend its virtual convention Oct. 23-25. The convention is free to all student members of NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, however, students who are not currently members may attend for only $25. The School of Journalism will pay the registration fee for students who want to attend; email jschool@ku.edu. Students who are not already members will receive a complimentary one-year membership to the association when they sign up for the convention. Student registration is available here.
The Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association is now accepting applications for its Reese Cleghorn Internship program, which supports developing college-student journalists by providing experience in newsrooms in Maryland, Delaware or the District of Columbia through eight-week paid summer internships. J-School Virtual Career Fair is Oct. 28 |
Make plans to participate in the J-School Virtual Career Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 28. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., employers will be conducting mini-interviews and drop-in sessions with KU students. Look for more details later on how to schedule times to connect with companies through a CareerFair Plus app.

The Career and Outreach Office will host Zoom sessions Oct. 14 and Oct. 21 to prepare students for the Virtual Career Fair on Oct. 28. Both sessions will begin at 1 p.m. Interview tips in a virtual setting will be the focus in the first session. The last day to register to vote in Kansas is Oct. 13. You may register and participate in the general election at www.ksvotes.org. College students may choose whether to register at their permanent home address or their address while at school. The J-School is also a co-sponsor of Civic Engagement Office Hours, a weekly Zoom drop-in session each Friday in October for anyone with questions about local voting procedures this year. Douglas County Clerk Jamie Shew and KU staff members will assist as needed to help provide credible sources and answers so that our communities can vote confidently and safely. Learn more here.
