Cristo Rey Lions’ Retreat on Peace and Inner Joy
On January 26th, Cristo Rey New York High School’s Class of 2024 ventured out to Mariandale Retreat Center in Ossining, New York, for a day devoted to peace.

During the first part of the retreat, students were asked to look inward and understand which elements of their lives made them feel joyful. They received a copy of a letter from Fra Giovanni, written on Christmas Eve, 1513 A.D.
In Fra Giovanni's letter, he states, “Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by the covering, cast them away as ugly, or heavy, or hard. Remove the covering and you will find beneath it a living splendor, woven of love, by wisdom, with power.” The students learned that the goal of this passage is to teach the importance of meeting life with grace. When we are able to do so, we recognize the depth and power of our joy and contentment and ultimately recognize the beautiful gift each day is.

The next part of the retreat focused on our students’ relationships with one another. We asked the students to consider how they positively impact each other. We also asked them to try and hold their positive interactions at the center of their thoughts, remembering how encouraging and harmonious friendships have made them feel. The result is a peaceful community that we name Cristo Rey New York.

The day concluded with a renewed appreciation for the gift of one another and our community as a whole. Long live CRNY!

Powered by Her Purpose: CRSM Alumna Receives Loyola University President’s Medallion Award
Ruby Hernandez '21 has been inspired by the world of business since her high school internships at Wintrust and Gewalt Hamilton Associates through Cristo Rey’s Corporate Work Study Program.

Now, the CRSM Class of ’21 graduate juggles full-time studies at Arrupe College of Loyola University with an apprenticeship at Grant Thorton LLP, rotating through the accounting, analytics, and tax departments. Next fall she will attend Loyola University as a junior with an accounting and analytics major, on her path to becoming an accountant.

Last year Ruby received the 2022 President’s Medallion from Loyola University. She also serves her fellow students as a student orientation leader and peer instructor for ACUNI (Arrupe’s first-year seminar). Ruby participates in Arrupe’s Emerging Leaders Program, Career Club, Entrepreneurship Program, Phi Theta Kappa, and the Grant Thornton Apprenticeship Program.

“Ruby embodies what we hope for all our students at Arrupe College; she understands the value of hard work and demonstrates that value daily. In addition, Ruby exhibits authentic qualities: she is person-centered, compassionate in her dealings with others, and is committed to excellence, especially when it comes to her personal growth,” said Fr. Tom Neitzke, S.J., EdD, Dean of Arrupe College.
The President’s Medallion honors students from each of Loyola’s 14 colleges, schools, and institutes who exemplify the meaning of being a true “Loyolan.”

Ruby says her call to service was kick-started as a student at CRSM. “I had to talk to people in the community and workplace and I used to be a very shy and reserved person. They instilled in me a sense of confidence and empowerment during my formative years that I never would have thought was possible."
