All clubs are encouraged to have at least one 4-H volunteer attend this meeting. This meeting will go over fair information and any 4-H updates. *Please note the date may change depending on when 4-H staff obtain information regarding summer programming guidelines.
4-H Trail Camera SPIN Club - Register soon, only 8 spots left!
The 4-H Trail Camera SPIN Club, will begin on Thursday, March 4th and end Thursday, April 8th. Registration closes on March 3rd. This club will meet virtually every Thursday from 5-6 pm EST. Youth will be introduced to ecosystems, Michigan wildlife, and learn how to contribute to science by examining trail camera footage and other observation methods. Members will receive a supply kit in the mail containing materials for activities and to support extended learning. Members can use their own cameras if they have them, or use footage collected by staff. This 4-H SPIN Club is FREE and OPEN to new and existing 4-H members statewide, ages 9 to 13. Save the Date: Junior Zoologist SPIN Club
Join 4-H volunteers and AmeriCorps members as we explore animal science! During the Junior Zoologists SPIN club, we’ll explore animal’s coats and behavior as well as identify animal parts through hands-on activities and games! Save the Date: Virtual Photography SPIN Club
By popular demand, the virtual photography SPIN club is back! Join us as we learn about camera equipment, composition, creative expression, and creating your own portfolio! Eaton County 4-H Council is selling county 4-H t-shirts and sweatshirts as a fundraiser! Due to the pandemic, 4-H Council was not able to conduct its annual 4-H Food Shack fundraiser, which supports our county 4-H awards, provides the funds to host the annual awards banquet, provides scholarships for youth and volunteers to attend state and national 4-H events like 4-H Exploration Days, and provides other fun and educational opportunities throughout the year.  

Preorder your shirts by filling out the order form. Payment and order are due by February 28 (preferred payment method is a mailed check). The deadline to order has been extended to accommodate changes with MDHHS guidelines and MSU Extension office operations. The shirts are expected to be available in March. T-shirts are $12 and sweatshirts are $25 each (2XL and 3XL sizes add $2/shirt). Statewide 4-H Events
Michigan 4-H LGBTQIA+ Alliance: Teen Leadership Team
Youth ages 15 – 19 are invited to join the teen leadership team for a new statewide Michigan 4-H LGBTQIA+ Alliance group. This advisory group will create opportunities for LGBTQIA+ youth and allies to come together for social connections and educational opportunities at the state, regional and local levels. 
An optional open house for teens to learn more and ask questions about the group will be held on Tuesday, March 9 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. (pre-registration is required at https://bit.ly/3q6v1D8).

Apply to be a teen member of the Michigan 4-H LGBTQIA+ Alliance leadership team at https://events.anr.msu.edu/4hlgbtqia/.  Applications will be accepted from February 15 to March 15. For more information, contact MSU Extension Educator Brian Wibby at wibby@msu.edu.

Registration closes 3/1 - Michigan 4-H Skillathon
What is the Skillathon?
A comprehensive test of your knowledge about all things agriculture, especially livestock! Participants will complete multiple choice questions in the areas of: Beef, Horses, Sheep, Swine, Dairy, Goats, Dogs, Rabbits, Poultry, and General Knowledge (Animal Care & Well-Being, Tools, Crops, Biosecurity, etc.).
 
Who is eligible to compete?
Compete with youth from your region for prizes and the chance to advance to the State Championship on April 10th. 
 
How old do you have to be to compete?
Competition Levels include:
  • Novice (Ages 8-11)
  • Junior (Ages 12-14)
  • Senior (Ages 15-19
  • Adult (20+)
 
How do you qualify for the State Championship?
Contestants that finish in the top 20th percentile are eligible to compete for the State Championship title.
 
Is there an entry fee?
There is no entry fee and all contestants will receive a Skillathon t-shirt!
 
How do you register?

MSU Tollgate Farm Programs
Are you familiar with MSU's Tollgate Farm? MSU Tollgate provides non-formal learning opportunities for youth to experience agriculture in an urban environment. They are offering many program options virtually, including:

  • 4-H Virtual Interactive Maple Sugaring Adventure for grades K-5 from March 1-5
  • 4-H STEAM Break Camp for grades 1-4 from March 29 - April 2
  • 4-H Virtual Interactive Follow the Nutrient Trail Adventure for grades 3-5, from April 26-30 (weeklong) OR April 8 - May 6 (weekly)
  • 4-H Virtual Interactive Plants and Their Partners Adventure for grades K-3, from May 3-7 (weeklong) OR May 4 - June 1 (weekly)
  • 4-H Stewards Teen Leadership Program for ages 13-19
  • 4-H Stewards Sustainability Leadership Institute for ages 15-19
  • 4-H Virtual Sustainable Stewards Series for ages 15-19

2020 American Ninja Warrior Champion Daniel Gil

Michigan 4-H would invite youth and families from across Michigan to participate in an awesome opportunity to hear from 2020 American Ninja Warrior Champion Daniel Gil. He will speaking to on Wednesday, March 24th at 6:30 pm.  He will talk about overcoming obstacles. This is open to any youth or families in Michigan. The youth that participate in the 4-H Ninja Training Club (see next event in this newsletter) will have the opportunity to ask questions to Daniel during his presentation.  Register at https://bit.ly/ninjagil

4-H Lego Creator SPIN Club

This club begins on Monday, February 22nd and end Friday, February 26th, registration closes on February 18th. This club will meet virtually every day from 3:30pm-4:45 pm EST. Hinamatsuri Japanese Girls' Day

Join States’ 4-H, Michigan 4-H, Kentucky 4-H, and Western Michigan University for a series of virtual events to celebrate Japanese Girls' Day!

Hinamatsuri, or Japanese Girls’ Day - also known at the Doll’s Festival - is celebrated on March 3rd to hope for the health and happiness of young girls in Japan. The series will consist of four sessions, each held at 6 PM EST:
  • February 23: History/Traditions of Japanese Girls Day & General Japanese Culture
  • February 24: Origami and Dolls (create a set), Language, Girl's Day Song
  • March 1: Sushi/Food, Eating Customs, Egg (Usuyaki Tamago)
  • March 3: Tour of a Japanese Home and Questions

Success and Safety on Volunteer-led Virtual Programs

4-H Capitol Experience Youth Summit

The 4-H Capitol Experience Youth Summit is now open for registrations. Youth in 8th grade through age 19 are invited to join with their peers to discuss topics important to them and learn how youth voices can make an impact on policy, both now and in the future. This 8-hour program spread across three days in March places an emphasis on meeting and discussing ideas with youth and elected officials from across Michigan. The $20 registration fee includes a mailed conference kit. Hero Time 4-H SPIN Club

IT’S HERO TIME! Join us as we discuss, create, and play games about heroes! We will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning February 23 through March 11, on Zoom. National 4-H Mars Base Camp Challenge

On March 8, 10, and 11, the race to land humans on Mars is on! The 4-H STEM Challenge will explore sending a mission to Mars with the activity, Mars Base Camp. Each participant will receive a family-sized kit that includes materials for 1-4 youth to participate in the offline activities and then share discoveries with youth from across Michigan.
Ages: 8-14 (Suggested)
Cost: $20 (Includes 4-H Mars Base Camp Family Kit)
Location: This is an interactive event with Michigan 4-H Staff that will take place virtually with activities done simultaneously at home. A Zoom link will be sent once registration is complete along with the Kit.

Clover Chasers 4-H Running Club

Do you want to learn more about fitness and running? Join the 6-week Clover Chasers 4-H Running Club! Youth ages 8-13 are invited to learn about nutrition, proper running form and hydration on Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:00p.m., March 11 through April 15. Michigan 4-H Beekeeping Essay Competition

4-H members showcase their knowledge, research, and writing skills in the 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest. One winner will represent Michigan in a National 4-H Competition, and a chance to win $750 and be published in ABF Quarterly. 4-H Lego Master Builder SPIN Club

Begins on Monday, March 15th and end Friday, March 19th, registration closes on March 11th. This club will meet virtually every day from 4-5:15 pm EST. Kami Ori Creators 4-H Club

Youth ages 5-19 will explore the cultures of Japan and China through the art of Origami. Each week, participants can choose how to participate (written instructions, videos, and/or Zoom meeting) and create a new origami project. Sessions will be led by both MSU Extension staff and guests. Finally, there will be an opportunity to participate in the 10,000 Cranes service project.

Virtual Culture Experience

The MSU Community Language School is partnering again with MSU Extension to host the Virtual Culture Experience on Saturday, March 13th from 1-4:30pm. The Virtual Culture Experience is geared for kids ages 8-19 years old and free! The cultural experience will showcase language and culture sessions in two languages: German
and Swahili. Each 90-minute session will have three 30 minute interactive activities: cooking, craft, and movement! Register by Monday, March 1st, 2021 to reserve your spot!

Graphic Novels 101 SPIN Club

Ever wanted to create a Graphic Novel, but didn’t know where to start? Now is your chance to learn the skills and create your very own Graphic Novel. Starting on March 5, we will meet every Friday until April 9, to give you the skills, knowledge, and practice of becoming a Graphic Novel Designer and Author. Back by Popular Demand!!! Pippin's Pantry 4-H SPIN Club! If you love baking, dogs, or both then this is the Club for you! Join Pippin and learn about People v. Pet food safety, how some people foods are harmful and others are safer for your pet, and get a bi-weekly dog-safe and Pippin approved treat recipe to bake together in class!

Wild Spartans: Searching for Vernal Pools

Join 4-H staff as we take a look into life working with fisheries and wildlife! This month during the 4-H Wild Spartans Series, we will take a dive into the springtime ephemeral pools in the woods to discover the treasures within! Join us on Tuesday, March 9th, 2021 at 7pm EST for “Searching for Vernal Pools, Nature’s Disappearing Act”. We will talk to a herpetologist about researching and conserving amphibians and reptiles. You will meet Yu Man Lee, Conservation Scientist, Michigan Natural Features Inventory, learn about her field work, and the education and career path she followed to get there. Youth will be encouraged to ask questions to learn more through a live Q&A with scientists. This free series is open to 4-H and non-4-H youth ages 12-19 years. Crafts Around the World

Beginning Wednesday, March 3 and every Wednesday thru April 7 from 5 to 6pm join us via Zoom as we travel around the world discovering crafts. Participants will be emailed the Zoom link and Materials needed for each session the week before and the Monday before. Registration includes all 6 sessions. Animal Tag-in Information for 2021
Tag-in procedures for Beef, Dairy Market Steers, Dairy Feeders, Sheep, and Swine are now available at https://eatoncountyfair.com/pageserver/tag-in/. Dates as follows:

  • Beef and Dairy Market Steers: Tag pick up starts February 1, forms due by February 28
  • Dairy Feeder: April 11 and 12, forms due by May 1
  • Sheep: April 25
  • Swine: April 11 and 12
