What started as quiet concern is growing much louder among climate scientists: without a very radical change of course within the next few years, we're not going to stop the world from passing 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming.
Australia

As south-east Australia shivers and Tasmania expects snow as low as 800 metres, up where the bananas grow the long-awaited rain is coming — more than 400 millimetres of it.

Starting out as an electrician, Chris Brayley's days were spent fixing air conditioning and refrigeration. In recent years, his company, Brayley Electrical, has shifted to become increasingly focused on solar power, particularly as more customers on rural properties turn away from generators as the cost of diesel continues to rise.
The buy now, pay later (BNPL) revolution has arrived for the agriculture industry, but opinions are split over the benefits of buying sheep or hay with deferred payments.

COVID restrictions: stay informed

With infection numbers rising again, it’s increasingly important to keep up with the status of pandemic regulations across the country. You can access state-specific information on COVID-19 from the links below:

Walking down the aisle to the melody of bellowing cattle is not everyone's ideal wedding, but as agritourism and rural events grow in popularity, farmers are cashing in.

This is the moment to change it all — the business climate, the political climate, and how we take action on climate. Now is the time for the unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, our families, and our livelihoods.
For Earth Day 2022, we need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). It’s going to take all of us. All in. Businesses, governments, and citizens — everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. A partnership for the planet.
New Zealand
New Zealand’s tally growing in 2022 NYIOOC medal count

New Zealand has featured in the top awards of the annual New York International Olive Awards (NYIOOC) since 2015 and this year is no different, with Olives NZ member producers making their mark on the 2022 competition.
For the third year running the NYIOOC is using remote judging but this year is progressively releasing results, rather than announcing all awards at the completion of judging. And with results still to be announced, the following ONZ members have so far achieved great results:
  • Dali Olives - Silver Medal
  • Kapiti Olives - Silver Medal
  • Blue Earth - Gold Medal
  • Totara Tunnel - Gold Medal
Olives NZ EO Gayle Sheridan said that with a total of eight entries from New Zealand this year, there are no doubt more medals to come!
Results to date are available here.

The DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka's signature restaurant has access to incredible local produce right on its doorstep.

It’s great to see this renowned chef acknowledging NZ’s high quality EVOO, and celebrating it in his restaurant.

When it comes to beauty, I’m a “kitchen sink” kind of girl. I like to make the most out of what I already have, and if happens to come from the fridge, even better.

Grapes pergola in the town of Harem, north of Idlib - 7 April 2022 (Enab Baladi/Iyad Abdul Jawad)

Although olive cultivation formed part of the identity of the town of Harem, north of Idlib city, which was known for its olive trees scattered over most of its agricultural lands, farmers had to uproot olive trees and replace them with grapevines during the past years.

Moving to a crop needing a higher water supply … don’t think many regions would be able to do that now.

Consuming high-phenolic extra virgin olive oil may help to delay the progression of one of the world’s most common types of cancers, a small study of 20 patients in Greece suggests.

Researchers from Spanish and Italian universities have identified a simpler and cheaper method to authenticate extra virgin olive oil’s geographical origin.
Daniel Daou of Daou Vineyards in Paso Robles has a theory about the role phenolics, or micronutrients only found in plants, play in consistently highly rated vintages of wine. “Look at a good year versus a bad year in Bordeaux,” Daou says.
