As for testing, Morris County has opened a no-cost COVID-19 Testing Site at County College of Morris. You can find more details here.
The Township Committee will hold its next regular meeting this Wednesday, February 17th at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held virtually via Zoom, which has been the practice since the start of the pandemic. The agenda can be found here
As you can see from the agenda, we will cover the following topics (among other items) at our meeting:
  • A Proclamation recognizing Black History Month, a beautiful tribute written by Committeewoman Cathy Wilson.
  • A continuation of our tradition recognizing a member of the public for their accomplishments, contributions, or volunteer work ---- tune in to see who it is this month!
  • Opportunity for public commentary and questioning on any matter relating to Morris Township.
  • The second reading of the ordinance dealing with the installation of Electric-vehicle (“EV”) charging stations, an initiative we undertook last year. Note: the ordinance relating to a proposed development at the office park located at 340 Mount Kemble Avenue will be heard at a Special Meeting to be held on February 24.
  • Commentary by Township Committee members.

At the January 20 meeting the Township Committee introduced the 340 Mount Kemble Avenue Redevelopment Ordinance. The proposal is to add a 225-room business-style hotel on the site. A copy of the Redevelopment Plan and “FAQ’s” (Frequently Asked Questions) are available on the Township website: https://www.morristwp.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1213

The site is one of three adjacent office parks making up the entire office complex located at 340, 350, and 412 Mount Kemble Avenue. Existing parking spaces at the adjacent office building are proposed to be removed to accommodate the new hotel building, and there will be very little disturbance of lands that are not already impervious surfaces (i.e. asphalt).

Next Steps to be taken:
  • A Special Township Committee meeting devoted to this project is scheduled for Wednesday, February 24 at 7:00 PM. This will be a public hearing for the ordinance and formal action may be taken. There will be a detailed presentation given by the Township’s Municipal Planner at this meeting. The public will then be able to ask questions about this project before any formal action is taken.
  • If (and when) the ordinance/plan is approved, a Redevelopment Agreement will be negotiated with the property owner and is subject to another approval by the Township Committee at a future public meeting.
  • The applicant must then submit a site plan to the Planning Board, and the Planning Board will subsequently conduct its own public hearing on the site plan. The public will again be able to ask questions or make comments at that meeting prior to any vote by the Planning Board.
  • If Planning Board approval is obtained, the applicant must then apply for construction permits before they will be able to commence with the construction of the hotel.
While we are turning the page on a difficult year we would all like to forget, we unfortunately still have to deal with the Coronavirus for probably another 5-8 months. I very much encourage all of our residents to make the personal choice to get the COVID-19 vaccination. Until enough people are vaccinated we all need to remain vigilant with wearing our masks and washing our hands frequently – as tired as we all are of doing that. We are nearing the finish line, and now is not the time to let your guard down.

As always, if you have a question or comment to share with me please send me an email to jgrayzel@morristwp.com . I would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Jeff Grayzel
Mayor, Morris Township
