YWCA GLENDALE SELECTED FOR THE BRIDGESPAN GROUP'S EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP LEADING FOR IMPACT PROGRAM
We are honored to announce that YWCA Glendale has been selected for The Bridgespan Group's prestigious executive leadership program, Leading For Impact - Los Angeles. The two year program, funded by the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation and The Ballmer Group will provide individual and group coaching and cohort classroom experiences to support the YWCA Glendale's executive team by learning and applying strategic and team development practices to deepen its impact in Glendale and surrounding communities. Over the course of two years, the team will complete two projects with The Bridgespan Group's guidance, examining and refining the organization's intended impact and theory of change. This program will undoubtedly be a game changer for the YWCA Glendale as it builds its leadership capacity to respond to this critical moment in time as domestic violence incidents increase and as the community turns to the YWCA to lead the call for racial justice and systems change. We look forward to sharing more about what the team is able to accomplish through this intensive learning experience.
ACTION ALERT: SIGN ON IN SUPPORT OF THE SUNDOWN TOWN RESOLUTION, TO BE HEARD BY GLENDALE CITY COUNCIL ON 9/15/20
In June 2020, the YWCA Glendale, Black in Glendale and a group of committed community members, parents, educators, and faith leaders formed the Coalition for an Anti-Racist Glendale to lead the community forward following the murder of George Floyd and to lay the groundwork for systemic change to address racial inequities in Glendale. The Coalition determined that a critical starting point for this work would be the passage of a formal resolution to acknowledge and apologize for Glendale's documented history as a sundown town. Historical documents, public accounts and newspaper articles demonstrate that Glendale was a sundown town for a majority of the 20th century, in which Black workers were asked to leave the City by sundown or face violence by police or community members, were excluded from residing or purchasing property in Glendale through discriminatory language in property deeds and covenants, and were made to feel unsafe due to the presence of the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party who maintained active chapters and headquarters in Glendale.

Racial segregation in America has had serious consequences for the well being of our country. Every sundown town must be asked to do three things to overcome its past: acknowledge its history; apologize for it; and atone for the past by committing to concrete actions to repair and remedy the injustices of its past. Making progress toward racial justice requires confronting the history of racial injustice. We invite our City Council to take this historic step of acknowledging Glendale's history of racism and its capacity to be a more just and equitable City by adopting the Sundown Town Resolution at their September 15th meeting.
EMPOWERING GIRLS TO LEAD: CAMP ROSIE
This year's Camp Rosie: Girls on the Rise was one for the history books! As COVID-19 changed nearly every facet of our lives, we quickly adapted our signature summer camp for girls to a virtual platform and joined forces with the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley to jointly serve a record number of campers! Nearly 100 girls participated in a series of workshops and activities focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education; Arts and Culture; Life Skills and Healthy Relationships; and Leadership and Civic Engagement. Our Camp Rosie Summer 2020 Impact Report charts the knowledge growth experienced by young girls across these four program areas through pre and post test measures and qualitative feedback from campers and their parents. We are also pleased to share the lessons learned in making the shift from in person to virtual programming - lessons we are now applying to our virtual after school programming: Girls Circle.
