International Coastal Cleanup

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
The debris that is on our shorelines, and in our waterways, is so much more than just a blemish to our environment, it is a public health threat as well as a serious danger to our ocean ecosystems. Keep Lee County Beautiful asks you to join us in making a difference by helping to clean our beaches and waterways.

This is the world's largest, single-day volunteer effort to clean up the marine environment. 2020 will be the 31st year that KLCB has hosted this event in Lee County where we have strived to preserve and protect our precious coastal community.

Join The Coastal Cleanup Using The "Clean Swell" Mobile App
This year if you are unable to join one of KLCB's cleanup sites for the International Coastal Cleanup you can still participate by using Ocean Conservancy's Clean Swell mobile app. This is available for free on both the App Store and Google Play. When you use this app, you will simply record every item you collect. The distance you cleaned is automatically tracked, see the total weight of trash collected when it is calculated for you and a historical record will be kept for your future cleanups.

After you complete your cleanup the data will be uploaded to the Ocean Conservancy's global ocean trash database. Keep Lee County Beautiful will be able to see what was uploaded for Lee County and add it to the amounts gathered at our coordinated sites so that we will have a comprehensive set of data to track our local trash trends.

National Public Lands Day
September 26, 2020
Since 1994 National Public Lands Day(NPLD) has been held on the fourth Saturday in September. This event has turned into the nation's largest single-day volunteer effort. It celebrates the connection between people and green space in their community, inspires environmental stewardship, and encourages the use of open space for education, recreation and health benefits.

There are a variety of ways that you can participate in NPLD. You could participate in a volunteer work project, or simply do something as simple as going to a public park and do some plogging. Plogging is jogging or walking, and picking up litter while you enjoy your jog/walk. There are also options this year to be a virtual volunteer. CLICK HERE to get information on virtual volunteering on public lands.

Look forward to weekly plogging events starting this Fall with Keep Lee County Beautiful!
Monofilament Madness
November 7, 2020
Join us in removing monofilament fishing line and other harmful debris from our local waterways. Volunteers will go out in kayaks, paddleboards, boats, canoes, jet skis...basically anything that floats! This project not only cleans these popular fishing areas of a large amount of fishing line and litter, it also protects our local marine life from the harmful damage these items cause them. Another benefit is the environmental awareness that is brought to those in the local area when they see this project taking place.

Sponsorship opportunities are now available for this event. This is a multi-site event with hundreds of volunteers participating to clean our waterways. Show you support by becoming a sponsor today.

Proper Disposal Of Pharmaceutical Waste
Improperly disposing of unused, unwanted, or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications can be detrimental to our environment. You should not wash these down the drain, flush them down the toilet or even throw them in the trash. Doing this will lead to the chemical compounds in these medications affecting a nearby water source. There are proper disposal location in Lee County. You may check with your pharmacy as some are collection centers. The addresses listed below are Lee County Sheriff Office's that are collection centers.

121 Pondella Rd, North Fort Myers
1301 Homestead Rd, Lehigh Acres
15650 Pine Ridge Road, Fort Myers
8951 Bonita Beach Rd, Bonita Springs
14750 Six Mile Cypress Pkwy, Fort Myers

Mangrove Tree Planting
July 18, 2020
Our volunteers did a wonderful job planting Mangrove trees on 640 feet of shoreline along a canal in Four Mile Cove, Cape Coral. These Mangrove trees will strengthen this shoreline as they continue to grow, serve as a barrier against storm surges and hurricanes. They will also become a nursery for a vast number of fish such as tarpon as well as a home for wading birds.

Keep Lee County Beautiful would like to thank not only the participating volunteers but also the City of Cape Coral who made this restoration possible. They purchased the trees and provided transportation from the launch site to the restoration area. With their help this project flowed smoothly and was a great success.
