Women, Religion and Culture in the United States
Dr. Margarita M.W. Suárez: Professor of Religious Studies and Ethics at Meredith College, Raleigh, NC. Margarita has taught courses in Women, Religion and Culture; Women and the Bible; Anthropology of Religion and World Religions among others. Her primary research has been on Interfaith Studies and on Religion in Cuba.

Her talk will focus on Women, Religion and Culture in the United States, looking at Patriarchal Religious Culture aimed at keeping women “in their place” both in Evangelical Christianity and Orthodox Judaism. She will discuss the similarities in these two patriarchal religious cultures and how they diverge from each other.

We are moving back to in-person meeting cautiously. No food will be served. Bring your own drink. If members wish to join with others for lunch, we will make a decision about location at the meeting. If you wish, you may join by Zoom.

Island Crowne is located at 1900 N. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach 32118

Struggles Over the Melting Arctic
U.S. President Donald Trump left many scratching their heads when it was rumored that he was looking to purchase the large island nation of Greenland from Denmark. While any potential deal seems highly unlikely, the event shows the changing opinion within the U.S. government toward engagement with the Arctic region. Because of climate change, large sheets of arctic ice are melting, exposing vast stores of natural gas and oil. With Russia and China already miles ahead with their Arctic strategies, can the U.S. catch up?

We Need YOUR Help!
This year we do not have a VP for Programs. We need YOUR help in planning programs. Many of you have great ideas and connections for interesting discussion leaders, speakers or topics. PLEASE SHARE THEM WITH US! If we work together we will have an outstanding selection of programs focusing on our interest in women, equity and education. Please contact Pat 386-252-1659 or paross@aol.com to let us know you are willing to arrange one of the monthly programs. Tentative dates in 2021 are: September 18, October 16 and November 20.
Most meetings will be at 11 am on the third Saturday of the month, but we can be flexible. For the time being, we will plan to meet at the Island Crowne Social Room and provide a zoom link for those who are not comfortable meeting in person. We can share a meal in a local restaurant after the meeting if members wish. You are encouraged to bring guests.
Our Book Group and Great Decisions Group have continued to meet successfully during Covid 19. If you have ideas for other interest groups you would be willing to help start, please let us know.
We are tenacious and trailblazing —
advocating for women and girls since 1881 and into the future!
Together, we can achieve a vision of equal opportunity for all!
