A Note from Fr. Joseph
Only about three weeks until our St. Jude's Festival! I am looking forward to it - I have been at many parishes that host annual summer fairs and festivals and it is always a good time. Nothing like some good old sausage and peppers with new friends!

Our Festival is a great fundraiser and a great community event - but it's also a great way to evangelize. This festival might be the first time in a few years that someone has set foot on our St. Jude's campus (or perhaps the first time they have EVER been here) and so we have a "captive audience", so to speak.

How can we leverage the fact that hundreds of families will be descending on our campus for four days in late August? First, go and sit with someone new in the dining tent. A lot of times we stay in our "comfort zone" of people we already know - but to evangelize someone, we must first encounter them! Once we encounter someone new and introduce ourselves to them, we can simply ask, "Are you a parishioner here?" If not, we can welcome them and invite them to check out our church. If they are a parishioner, ask them what Mass they attend - if it's been a while, invite them back!

Sometimes all people are waiting for is an invitation - perhaps, because of Covid, they fell out of the habit of attending Mass...perhaps they just moved here and didn't know anyone...perhaps they had a bad experience with the Church but are really hungering to be reconciled to Her. And our invitations can go a long way!

So let's take advantage of this awesome festival by using it to get to know our neighbors and invite them to encounter the Lord here at St. Jude's!

We also need lots more Festival volunteers...please see below and sign up to help!

Help Our Parishioners Suffering from a House Fire

Two of our faithful parishioners, Dee and Tony Calise, suffered a tragedy on the morning of August 5th when their house burned to the ground. Thankfully they were not in the house at the time, but the home is a total loss. A GoFundMe has been set up for them at this time, and we invite you to contribute if you feel called: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-dee-and-tony-rebuild-their-home . Please keep them in your prayers during this difficult time.

Thanks. A later furniture/homegoods drive may be forthcoming in a couple months.

CATHOLIC BIBLICAL SCHOOL
Now with distance learning options!

Jesus is uniquely present to his followers today not only through the Eucharist, but also through an informed and prayerful reading of the Bible. The Catholic Biblical School (CBS) invites adults into a personal encounter with our Lord in Sacred Scripture. Virtual classes have real-time and expert instructors and begin shortly after Labor Day. A “satellite” class will meet at the Catholic Center in Bridgeport and at a parish site in Stamford for simultaneous hybrid learning.

Registration runs now through August 31, 2021. For more information, check out our website at www.catholicedaohct.org or contact BJ Daly Horell, CBS Director and a member of St. Jude’s Parish at catholic.biblical.school@aohct.org.

St. Jude Parish Outreach

The third parish outreach project, coordinated by Angela Baril, was recently completed. Volunteers called active parishioners, age 70 and over, who do not have email and therefore are not receiving our weekly newletter.

Volunteers made 117 phone calls in total. We thought it was a good time to reach out to parishioners once again, as we could inform them of the church reopening guidelines, and that Father Henry will be leaving St. Jude and Father Gill was being assigned as our new Adminstrator.

Overall, parishioners appreciated the calls, most especially the homebound, who welcome the opportunity to engage in conversation with a member of the St. Jude Outreach Ministry Team. As a result of the calls, Father Henry was able to visit a homebound parishioner and bring him communion.

Special thanks to the Outreach Team who made the phone calls:

Marian Flynn, Mary Jane Lux, Veronica Condon, Wendy Gurski, Donna Cramond, Ellen Stevens, Diane Saliga, Jana Veo, Brian Veo, Jean Paul, Sally DeChristopher, Roberto Lopez, and Carole Donnarumma.

We are still marketing our parish center (former school building) with the hope of offsetting operation costs.  Please contact the parish office for more information.
