OCBC CELEBRATES LEA SUCCESS, LAST CALL FOR NOMINATIONS, WELCOME HOLLAND & KNIGHT, NO TO EXPANDED SICK LEAVE AND MORE!
HOT OFF THE PRESS
ICYMI! WATCH OCBC'S ANNUAL LEA RECEPTION:
  • OCBC held its annual LEA Reception on Tuesday to honor all the families who successfully completed the 10 Education Commandments and recognize the strong community behind the program's monumental success. The night was inspiring, filled with parent testimonials on the program's positive impact. Mayra Reyes, a parent of a Ponderosa Elementary Student, said, "The classes taught me the importance of helping your child at an early age so that they have a successful future." LEA, formerly known as Latino Educational Attainment, now stands for Leading Educational Attainment for Families, encompassing the programs' inclusive reach and expansion. Special thank you, Mario Aguirre, for being an extraordinary Emcee and SoCalGas, our title sponsor. Watch it here!

NEW WEBSITE SHOWS HOW OC IS USING FEDERAL PANDEMIC AID:
  • Orange County Business Council’s President and CEO, Lucy Dunn, said the money was “hugely important” and allowed some businesses to keep their doors open through OCBC’s SafeDineOC program, which administered restaurant aid funds. Dunn sees the fruits of the county’s aid spending in its unemployment rate, which she said recently rose as more people resumed looking for work, but at 6.3% is lower than the state’s 7.9% rate. “Our economy’s coming back,” said Dunn. ADVOCACY
OCBC OPPOSES UNREASONABLE EXPANSION OF PAID SICK LEAVE:
  • OCBC and a coalition of business groups statewide ask the State Senate to oppose AB 1041, a bill expanding the California Family Rights Act to allow employees to take leave to care for any person of their choosing, exposing businesses to costly litigation under the Private Attorneys General Act. In addition to other expansions of paid leave, businesses—especially small businesses—will face increased costs while they recover from the pandemic. Read the letter here.

OCBC OPPOSES IMPOSING BROAD BURDENS ON WAREHOUSE OPERATORS:
  • OCBC and a coalition of business groups statewide ask the State Senate to vote no on AB 701, a bill targeting warehouse distribution centers with onerous regulations. The bill would give plaintiffs’ attorneys more grounds to leverage large settlements from warehouse employers. AB 701 would raise costs for warehouses, which would be passed down to consumers. Warehouses are key contributors to Orange County’s supply chain and economic competitiveness. Read the coalition letter here.
COVID-19 FACTS
OCHCA'S LATEST UPDATES:
Residents should wear a mask in both indoor public and non-public settings, especially if they or someone they live with is immunocompromised or at increased risk. CDC recently issued a health advisory against the use of a prescription medication called ivermectin, normally used to treat certain infections caused by internal and external parasites, to prevent or treat COVID-19. Currently, only third doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are being offered to individuals ages 12 and up receiving treatments associated with moderate to severe immune compromise. Learn more.
