The 2021 Zone 10 North American Youth Championship (NAYC) Selection Trials wrapped up and Zone 10 is fielding top teams in each of the four categories: Young Riders, Juniors, Children’s, and the all-new Pre-Juniors (1.30m). Best of luck to everyone heading to the 2021 FEI North American Youth Championships at the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival (Aug. 10-15, 2021) in Traverse City, Mich.
Remember that registration is open for the 2021 USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge, USHJA Adult Horsemanship Quiz Challenge, and the USHJA Stable Challenge. It’s time to put your horsemanship knowledge to the test and encourage your entire barn to jump in on the fun and learning!
We are so proud of all the USHJA Affiliate Organizations within our zone. Throughout the year we will be highlighting each of them and this month we are featuring the California Professional Horsemen’s Association (CPHA).
We look forward to seeing you in the show ring this summer!

Taylor and L'Con Reyes Take Top Honors in $25,000 USHJA World Championship Hunter Rider Summer Hunter Spectacular
|
|
It was finally time for Katie Taylor and L'Con Reyes to take a Spectacular win in this year's $25,000 USHJA WCHR Summer Hunter Spectacular at Blenheim Equisport's June Classic I. The duo's two-round score of 177.5 put her and Bravado LLC's Oldenburg gelding on top of the leaderboard, ahead of reserve champion Caroline Ingalls with Concerto and third-placed Katalina Considine-Rickard and Lennox RW.
"It’s a fantastic feeling. I’ve been Reserve Champion twice both on the West and East Coast, so I was ready to step it up and take top honors, especially with my long-time partner, L’Con Reyes," said Taylor of her win. "Theo has been in the top 10 of the WCHR Spectacular multiple times, so I was ready to help him get that championship he so deserved."

Roseboom Repeats USHJA Pony Hunter Derby Championship - West Win with Truly Noble
|
|
Shiloh Roseboom repeated last year's win in the USHJA Pony Hunter Derby Championship - West Coast at the 2021 iteration on June 26 at the Blenheim June Classic III. This time, the Corona, California, rider piloted Pegasus Show Stable, Inc.'s Truly Noble to the championships title with a two-round score of 173.5.
"[Shiloh] was the epitome of the description of the [second round of the] class, which is to be handy. She took pretty much every inside turn that she could. She happened to be on a pony that also jumps very well, so overall, it was pretty doggone good," said Sue Lightner, who joined Irving Evans in judging as panel one. Read more.

USHJA Recognized Riding Academy Spotlight
|
|
Tell us about your program and who you serve.
Our program develops riders as young as 2 years old, and is an introduction to our showing program. We keep the lessons private to ensure safety and to eliminate overwork of our wonderful lesson ponies.
What made you want to become a Recognized Riding Academy?
I was already a USHJA Certified Trainer and wanted to offer the best quality program available. I can ensure that anyone looking into our program also knows we are qualified and certified.
Tell us about your star lesson horse and why he/she is the best lesson horse around.
Chester is our main lesson pony. He is a 13.1hh bay Welsh pony with the patience of a saint as well as smooth gaits. Chester is 20 now but started with us at 15 and has been an absolute star. He does is all from leadline to learning to canter poles.

USHJA Outreach Member Highlight
|
|
Kyla Logue, of Santa Barbara, California, was the 2020 Outreach Champion in the USHJA Hunters Walk/Trot section.
What did you enjoy about participating in the Outreach program in 2020?
The USHJA Outreach Program adds a fun and rewarding element to a sport I love!
Tell us how you got involved in the sport.
We live in a community where there are a lot of horses and horse trails. We would even drive around looking for horses before my baby sister would take a nap! I have always loved animals and different sports. I thought riding would be a great way to combine both of my interests.
What’s your favorite riding memory?
My favorite riding memory is the first time I went to a show.
What are riding goals for this year?
My riding goals for this year are to continue improving, showing, and keep having fun!
What do you enjoy most about the USHJA community?
It is nice having a well-organized community supporting all riders.

The California Professional Horsemen’s Association (CPHA) aims to provide programs and benefits for equine professionals working in California.
“Being able to give back to the professionals that give so much to this sport is hugely important to us,” said Jeni Brown, CPHA President. “There are two arms of CPHA: the organization that runs programs to benefit the Foundation and the Foundation.”
The CPHA Foundation is dedicated to aiding professionals in times of need, providing higher education opportunities through scholarships and grants, educating principles of horsemanship, and fostering amateur equestrian sports and sportsmanship.
CPHA offers medals classes from 2’6’’ through 1.10m. “Our goal is to provide opportunities for riders throughout the West Coast,” Jeni said. “We offer regional medal finals in Northern California and Southern California. A portion of all the proceeds from these classes and 100% of the proceeds from our WCE Foundation Medal and Foundation Equitation Medal classes go toward supporting the Foundation. We are so appreciative of the riders and trainers who support these classes.”
In addition to their medal finals, CPHA also offers a variety of special awards. “We host an awards banquet at the beginning of the year in San Diego. It’s a special night where were honor some incredible horsemen,” Jeni noted. “Our year-end honors include CPHA Horseman of the Year as well as a Sportsmanship Award. We also do a year-end high point award for the Foundation WCE, Foundation Equitation, and Style of Riding, which encourages riders to compete in these classes all year long, even if they have already qualified for the finals.”
The CPHA is proud to be a USHJA Affiliate Organization. “The USHJA offers programs and benefits that are so helpful to all of our members,” Jeni added. “I think all of the programs, such as the Emerging Athletes Program (EAP) really help the young riders to grow and learn. These programs are especially helpful if they are planning to become equine professionals.”
