Adopt A Pet from the Lassen
County Animal Shelter – Leo
Leo is an all around happy guy even though he’s been through a lot. Life has definitely had its ups and downs for him, but he’s ready to start fresh and new. All he needs is a family to shower him with love and friendship.
From the first moment he sees a new face, Leo is all tail wags and smiles. Currently, Leo is housed with another dog (a female) that he came in with but more testing will need to be done to determine how he is with dogs he doesn’t know.
| |
|
Potential adopters should be aware that Leo has been living on his own for a while and they should extend to him patience as he re-adjusts to home life again. Leo is thought to be a lab mix around 3 years old and is neutered. If interested in meeting Leo, or other adoptable animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter, please call the staff at (530) 257-9200.
Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. Two Arrested After Early Morning
Traffic Stop Nets Multiple Narcotics
Two Honey Lake Valley residents were arrested early Tuesday morning after Lassen County Sheriff’s Deputies allegedly found multiple controlled substances and drug paraphernalia in their vehicle during a traffic stop for code violations.
Just after midnight deputies pulled the car over within the city limits, identifying the driver as 30-year-old Janesville resident Brianna Harrod, 30, and her passenger as 55-year-old Susanville resident Timothy Lee McCallister Jr.
| |
|
Deputies were assisted by Susanville Police Department K9 “Zeke” who conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle and positively alerted to the presence of narcotics.
“Upon searching the vehicle,” explains LCSO Captain Mike Carney, “deputies and officers located a glass smoking device with a white residue, commonly used to ingest methamphetamine. Also located inside the vehicle was a backpack that contained Fentanyl, Xanax, and Oxycodone.”
McCallister was placed under arrest and transported to the Lassen County Jail where he was booked for charges that included possession of a narcotic controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.
Harrod was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.
“The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Susanville Police Department for their assistance in this case. The Sheriff’s Office would also like the public to be aware of the dangers associated with Fentanyl. Please take the time read the Fentanyl Drug Fact Sheet and share with your loved ones.”

LIHEAP Weather Bulletin: Temperatures
Set to Plummet Tuesday and Wednesday
Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno are warning that, despite today’s expected warm weather, a very cold winter system will arrive late tonight to remind us that we are still in the middle of winter.
West to northwest winds will increase this afternoon, shifting out of the north Tuesday. Gusts of 35 to 45mph are expected region-wide, with stronger gusts in higher elevations and wind-prone locations. This will bring rough conditions on area lakes.
| |
|
Snow showers will develop overnight into Tuesday, primarily for areas near and south of I-80 both in the Sierra and western Nevada. A secondary round of snow will develop in the Sierra and here in northeast California Tuesday and Tuesday evening.
While overall totals will be light, generally a dusting up to three inches, it doesn’t take much to cause travel difficulties.
Tuesday will be a harsh shock to the system. High temperatures will remain in the 30s Tuesday and Wednesday in even the warmest of valleys, with teens and 20s in the mountains. Widespread teen and single digit lows can be expected, with colder valleys dipping below zero.
To add insult to injury, the addition of wind will make it feel even colder, especially Monday night and Tuesday. Wind chill values will easily be in the single digit to below zero range at times.
Bundle up Tuesday and Wednesday and be sure to protect vulnerable populations as well as pets.

The St. Francis Hotel, Main and Union Streets, in the late 1940’s. From an Eastman Studios postcard.
Hotel is Sold at Susanville
February 13, 1944
The St. Francis Hotel on Main street became the property of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Evans Monday, as the result of a sale by the Neuhause estate. Acting for the estate were Mrs. Florence Talbot and H. L. McMurphy through Attorney J. A. Pardee. The property was bought by Evans for $50,000.
The new owner has been a contract logger in Lassen county for a number of years. Improvements will include new manager quarters, refurbishing the restaurant, and reupholstering and redecorating of the lobby.
