Dear LNC Families,

As we enter the third full week of school, we want to commend our students and parents for their cooperation, support and heightened vigilance related to COVID-19. We are so grateful to be learning in-person, at school, and are committed to taking the extra measures to stay that way.

In addition to our health and safety protocols, we have taken the following actions already this school year:

  • Contracted with a part-time nurse at the elementary school to assist with our COVID needs. Chris Kolmeir is a registered nurse with over 25 years of experience, most recently in a school setting assisting with COVID-related needs. Mr. Kolmeir will begin at LNC next Tuesday, September 7. Mr. Kolmeir’s main role will be to provide COVID support at the elementary school, but he will also assist our district healthcare coordinator, Rebecca Shipman, with institutional COVID case tracking, testing and contact tracing.

  • Adjusted classroom seating configurations and snack time procedures (elementary school) to further reduce face-to-face exposures.

  • Instituted “no talking time” while eating lunch at the elementary and middle schools. A huge shout out to our students for their cooperation with this important practice that is keeping them safe when their masks are off!

  • Contracted with a part-time mental health counselor to assist with the increased social-emotional needs of our student body. Dr. Danielle Graham is a mental health specialist at Novant Health and she will be working across LNC’s three schools to assist with the increased mental health needs we know the pandemic has brought. If you have not already done so, please answer the brief mental health questionnaire (posted to Schoology earlier this week) here.

  • Increased mask usage to include sedentary activities during recess when students are in close contact, i.e., sitting across from one another conversing at a picnic table (elementary school).

In addition to these actions, you can expect LNC to do the following:

  • Contact you immediately if your child has symptoms consistent with COVID. If any of your contact information has changed, please update it here.

  • Notify you immediately if we learn that your child has been exposed to COVID at school. Keep in mind that the NCDHHS updated "exposure" to exempt students who are masked and/or vaccinated even if they were within six feet of each other.

  • Advise you immediately if we need to make the difficult decision to temporarily close a classroom because of a COVID cluster that could not be definitively attributed to "community spread,” i.e., transmission outside of school. In this event we will provide remote learning plans. Additionally, we will share the information with the entire grade level.

Following are some important measures that we need you, our parents, to take to help mitigate risk at school.

  • Keep your student at home if they are experiencing any of the symptoms related to COVID-19. Please review the list below as NCDHSS has expanded it with the emergence of the Delta variant:
  • Runny nose and/or congestion - allergy type symptoms
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Fever or chills

  • If your student is eligible, please consider having them immunized. The vaccine is having a clear and positive impact as we are seeing the most COVID cases at our elementary school, fewer cases at the middle school and fewer yet at the high school. Last year, the exact inverse of this was true, proving the vaccine is making a difference. Go here to find a convenient site to get vaccinated.

While we are committed to maintaining as normal of a school year as possible, we will not hesitate to make necessary changes to our operations in the interest of student and staff safety. However, we believe with careful monitoring, parent and student cooperation, and LNC's continued ability to adapt our procedures as needed, we will be able to preserve the in-person learning environment. You are all valued stakeholders in the LNC community and we thank you in advance for your support.

Together we learn, lead and serve.

We Are LNC!
