Angie Maseman Announces Retirement
Director of Special Services

After twenty-five years of service to public education, Mrs. Angie Maseman has announced her retirement from the Hallsville School District, effective July 1, 2023. Mrs. Maseman joined the Hallsville School District in 2017 as the Director of Special Services and has worked tirelessly to support and advocate for students with special needs. Under her leadership, Maseman and her team established a comprehensive program to evaluate and guide improvement efforts for the operations of the Special Services Department, ensuring each student’s educational needs were met, including speech and language services; physical therapy, occupational therapy; behavioral modification; special instruction through intervention specialists and paraprofessionals; and other specialized services. In addition to supervising and monitoring 504 and IEP services for students who require accommodations to fully access their education, Maseman is also the district’s compliance officer overseeing non-discrimination policies and compliance with the regulations implemented in federal legislative requirements.

“I am thankful to be a part of the Hallsville family and community and proud of the work our department does every day for our students with special needs,” states Maseman. ”I look forward to this new chapter and appreciate the opportunity that Hallsville has provided me.”

The district will immediately begin a search for a Special Services Director for the 2023-22024 school year.

Bond Construction Update

At the January meeting, the Board of Education approved the final resolution authorizing the lease‐purchase transaction for partial financing of the construction projects in the amount of $1,546,000. Documents regarding the lease-purchase agreement can be found under Agenda Item 6

The Board approved the final construction documents that will be used in the solicitation of bid packages.

The district has also encountered a complication on the middle school wing: the city’s water supply is inadequate to deliver the minimum amount of water necessary to meet code on the required fire suppression system. Klingner has engaged the City of Hallsville on this matter, and the Board of Aldermen approved the engagement of Crockett Engineering to perform a feasibility analysis and identify potential options for the delivery of water to the middle school wing location. Crockett understands the urgency of this matter and has begun this process. Several options are available moving forward; district costs will likely be associated with most of these. You can follow construction updates online here

RECOGNITIONS

Officer Cummings was recognized for his work in training the secondary faculty and staff in active shooter and intruder response training.

EVALUATION OF SCHOOL CLIMATE
The district administers perceptual surveys on school climate to students at specific grade levels, their parents, faculty, and staff each year. Summary results are available here, and individual results are below. Climate survey data are analyzed annually and used by administrators and faculty teams to set building and district improvement goals.

FINAL ASSESSED VALUATION
The county delivered the district’s final assessed valuation, which was determined to be roughly $2 million higher than the preliminary number. The district should expect approximately $75,000 in additional local revenue during the current tax season.

DISTRICT ASSESSMENTS
Several years ago, the District purchased i-Ready as a way to measure student learning in reading and math. Teachers have given this assessment at least three times yearly to track student growth and inform classroom instruction. Teachers are concluding the mid-year assessment and beginning to meet to discuss growth and create plans to adjust instruction based on results. Results are available by building, grade level, classroom, and individual student. Results are also broken down into specific components of math and reading. Each of the reports in i-Ready allow us to evaluate our curriculum and instruction differently. The system also includes student lessons tied to individual student needs as determined by the assessments. Teachers are integrating those lessons into instruction and tracking student progress.

SCHOOL SAFETY
On January 9th, SRO Justin Cummings, Bryan Schultz, Todd Burke, and a few other officers conducted active shooter training with the secondary staff. In February, they will work with the elementary staff. You can view Officer Cummings October Board Report here

POLICY UPDATES
This was the second reading of policy and regulation updates. Policies went into effect after the second reading and were approved by the Board of Education.
