It's almost moon cake time!

If you're not a fan of lotus seed paste, did you know there is a nut-and-grain filling called wuren 五仁?

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 21st in 2021. This harvest-season holiday is similar to Thanksgiving in that it traditionally involves a family gathering and eating more than you should.

Other traditions surrounding the Mid-Autumn Festival include:

  • Looking at the full moon and thinking of far-away loved ones who are looking at the same moon at the same time.

  • Eating round pastries called moon cakes that, like fruit cake in the US, are often gifted and re-gifted until someone eats them.

As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, take some time to send a short message of holiday well-wishing to your contacts in the Chinese-speaking world.

WeChat has a function that allows you to send the same holiday greeting to all your contacts at once, so a personalized greeting will earn more brownie points than a perfunctory mass-message.

Fun fact: On September 15, 1915, the first issue of what would become 新青年/La Jeunesse magazine was published. Edited by Peking University president Chen Duxiu, the magazine was part of a movement in China to analyze why China had been subject to foreign imposition for so long, and to seek methods of reform to break the cycle.

Effective representation of clients in international transactions requires sensitivity to, and understanding of, foreign cultures, languages and laws. U.S. business practices are not necessarily the norm throughout the world, and U.S. law differs markedly from the law in many foreign countries. From offices in Ohio, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., Porter Wright's international attorneys have assisted clients in over 60 different countries on all continents, tailoring legal solutions for a variety of transactions in major international arenas.

While today’s international issues are complex – and not always obvious – Porter Wright works with clients to ensure a successful transaction, no matter the business issue at home or abroad. Our international transaction lawyers, including those fluent in German, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean, are sensitive to the nuances and potential snares of transacting business under different systems of law. Likewise, our international litigators and arbitrators are perceptive to the unique aspects of cross-border dispute resolution. Our team has worked with foreign legal systems in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia, including China and Japan.

To complement our in-house depth, Porter Wright maintains long-established relationships with foreign law firms on whom we rely for expertise in specific transactions or disputes.

Porter Wright attorneys have engaged in a variety of international business transactions, consulting on:

  • Entity selection and formation
  • International tax and estate planning
  • Export controls
  • U.S. customs and foreign import restrictions
  • Foreign corrupt practices
  • Cross-border M&A
  • Hiring of foreign nationals
  • International data privacy
  • Executive compensation issues and agreements
  • International tax structuring and obligations
  • Federal, state and local sales, use, value added and income taxes
  • Federal and state reporting requirements triggered by foreign ownership of U.S. businesses
  • International patent and trademark registration, protection, infringement and arbitration
  • Food product laws
  • Currency exchange
  • International trade regulation
  • Government incentives for foreign direct investment

Looking for Clarity from the IRS Regarding Foreign Activities? Be Careful What You Wish For!

It was about 10 years ago that the IRS started enforcing required reporting for controlled foreign entities. The passing of the TCJA in 2017, meanwhile, resulted in significant changes in the taxation of foreign investments, and the IRS is now catching up with expanded reporting requirements.

Rickenbacker named Ohio Airport of the Year
Rickenbacker International Airport (LCK) has been named 2021 Airport of the Year by the Ohio Aviation Association at their Annual Ohio Aviation Conference. The award honors airports that have made extraordinary accomplishments in aviation.

Rickenbacker was recognized for its leadership during an unpredictable year that brought emergency PPE shipments, record-breaking shipments of international cargo, and its first passenger aircraft converted for cargo.

“We’re honored that LCK could play a key role to ensure vital medical equipment and PPE could get to our essential front-line workers around the nation,” said Joseph R. Nardone, President & CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority. “Not only did we weather the storm, but Rickenbacker came out stronger and we will continue to serve as a critical global air cargo gateway.”

Meet Our Newest Member!
The Ohio Soybean Council (OSC) was founded in 1991 to manage the Soybean Promotion and Research Program – more commonly known as the soybean checkoff.

The program’s primary goal is to improve soybean profitability by targeting research and development, education and promotion projects through the investment of farmer-contributed funds

OSC farmer leaders review and, as necessary, revise the organizational strategic plan. This process helps OSC stay ahead of market trends in order to make the best short and long-term investment decisions on behalf of Ohio soybean farmers.

The Chinese Chamber is proud to have the OSC aboard, and look forward to working together to further promote Ohio soybean and soy product exports to the Chinese-speaking world.
