Students, please follow the steps and instructions below to register online via the Source. C onsult with your current teachers if you have questions regarding a specific subject area's course sequence.
Students with IEPs should work directly with their IEP case manager to select their courses for 2021-22.
Registration drop-in help sessions
BHS Counselors will be hosting drop-in help sessions to get your questions answered, check your Counselor’s Schoology page to access the times and links to these meetings. Please attend a drop-in session before trying to setup an individual meeting.
PLEASE NOTE! Your 2021-22 class schedule is built completely on which courses and alternates you SUBMIT ONLINE. If you do not complete this CRITICAL step within your registration window posted above, it could result in not getting the courses you wanted.

During these challenging times, it’s critical to stay connected. Did you know that BHS has a wide variety of FREE medical and mental health services that are provided on campus? Both our school nurse and the Swedish Medical Center/Ballard Teen Health Center (BTHC) are available to support students now and when school meets in person.
Mental Health Counselor Chelsea Clark, MSW, LICSW and Nurse Practitioner Karen Boudour, ARNP will discuss BTHC care options during the building closure and share helpful resources.
The presentation follows a quick PTSA introduction and Principal Keven Wynkoop update. We are looking for questions to be submitted ahead of time (by Feb. 10), so that our panelists can be prepared.

BHS Diversity Empowerment Council forming |
We have a new group for families of color at BHS called the Diversity Empowerment Council. Any family member or student of color can join. The group's goal is building relationships with and centering the voices and ideas of the families of color at Ballard. We meet the third Thursday of every month from 7-8 p.m. via Teams.
We are currently working on outreach to students, systems for supporting students of color at school, and planning an evening event for families of color and their allies.

Report cards should be ready mid-month |
Report Cards will be available to view on the Source after the end of the 1st Semester grading process has been completed, estimated to be Feb. 19. Printed copies may be requested if families are unable to access remotely by emailing BHS Counseling Secretary Carol Bristol at chbristol@seattleschools.org

Spring Running of Beavers event cancelled |
The Ballard High School Foundation's Running of the Beavers 5K Run/Walk fundraising event is not able to take place this spring.
"We pride ourselves on the fun, festive environment at our event and the participant experience overall. There is also nothing more important to us than the safety of our participants and volunteers. At this time, we are choosing not to hold our event until it is safe to do so," according to the Foundation's statement.

SAT School-Day Assessments Update |
Due to health and public safety concerns, the administration of the March 2021 school day SAT for Juniors has been cancelled.
Students are still able to register and take the PSAT and SAT but will need to register on their own through the CollegeBoard. Please visit CollegeBoard for additional information and resources.

Drop off cards 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays in bins outside BHS. Remember to include first AND last names. Students will be alerted if they have a valentine to pickup Curbside! Deadline: Feb. 9.

If you are done with your BHS Library book you can return it either during Curbside events or on any school day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the bins outside of the south (Main Office) building entrance.

Verto Education is hosting its first national virtual college fair, with 50+ Colleges and Universities, and national education experts, from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10! Come meet with admissions counselors from top colleges and universities, converse with current college students about their experiences, and attend college-readiness workshops! Attendance for each fair limited to 5,000 students, parents, and counselors so register here!

Women's University Club of Seattle Scholarships |
The Women's University Club of Seattle seeks students focused on the humanities and social sciences as well as students with science, technology, engineering and math goals (STEM) for scholarship consideration. Successful candidates reflect the Foundation’s values of innovative leadership, civic involvement, and personal growth.
Applications must be received no later than Tuesday, Feb. 16. Applications are available online at washboard.org under the search name "Women’s University Club of Seattle Foundation." View the attached WUC Application Flyer for more information.

Microsoft DisAbility Scholarship | $5,000 per year
|
The Microsoft DisAbility Scholarship will be awarded to promising high school seniors with disabilities who plan to attend a vocational or academic college and target a career in the technology industry. The scholarships are renewable – each winner who continues to meet the criteria is eligible to receive an annual award of $5,000 for up to four consecutive years for a potential total $20,000 scholarship. Deadline: March 1.

B3 Banner Scholars Program offers $10K yearly for college |
Applications for the Ron & Vanessa Banner Scholars Program are currently being accepted through March 15. B3’s mission is to foster the next generation of student leaders. B3 Foundation President Zach Banner grew up in Tacoma and is currently an Offensive Tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The scholarship is named for his teacher parents.
Scholarship recipients will receive $10,000 annually for four years and will be paired with a mentor in the field of their choosing who will coach them throughout their college experience. Criteria and application info HERE.

|
Sunsets are magical. Have you noticed the days are getting longer and the sun is setting an hour later now? Each evening, right on schedule the sun sets every single day. We can count on it. Have you ever taken a few moments to watch the sunset? It is calming and beautiful. It has also been shown to put one in a good mood. It gives one a reason to go outside for a walk to see the sun set. Watching a sunset can influence a creative person and help the wired person slow down. Watching a sunset can give us an appreciation for the beauty of our Earth. There is no time like the present to experience the magic of a sunset. |
BTHC offers student health care services |
The Ballard Teen Health Center (BTHC), a collaboration between BHS and Swedish Medical Center, offers both remote and scheduled in-person visits to students for medical and mental health purposes. The Center is funded through the Families, Education, Preschool and Promise Plan levy.

SPS Nutrition Services offer free meal distribution to students/families from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. weekdays at 40 meal sites around the city -- including these area neighborhood schools:

MetroLeagueWA Updates | Season 1 registration due
|
Based on the information in Gov. Inslee’s plan, the MetroLeagueWA adopted a two-season sports model for this year only. This format protects participants’ safety while providing student-athletes the best possible quality athletic experience. Seasons and/or sports may need to be adjusted based on Puget Sound Region's metrics.
SEASON 1 | Feb. 22 - April 17 | Athletic Registration Due NOW
Boys: Football
Girls: Soccer, Slowpitch Softball, Swim & Dive, Volleyball, Gymnastics
Coed: Cross Country, Golf
Physicals must be current from the first day of tryouts/practices until the day after the State Playoffs. Physicals may be scheduled with the Ballard Teen Health Center as well.

Boys Lacrosse Team recruiting new players |
BHS Boys Lacrosse, a club sport, is actively recruiting new players for the Spring 2021 season. Practices are being held now and the season starts April 19.

On March 24, the Seattle School Board will appoint a school board director for District IV (4) representing Northwest and Central Seattle including Magnolia, Queen Anne, and southern neighborhoods in Ballard. |

SPS Skills Center Applications open |
Applications for the Seattle Skills Center’s 2021-22 school year courses are now available online on the Skills Center website.
The Seattle Skills Center prepares Seattle Public Schools high school students for college, career, and life through advanced Career and Technical Education courses. Classes are available in a wide range of career pathways at several locations around the city. Courses are both offered for the school year and summer sessions.
The Seattle Skills Center programs are 1.5 credits per semester, full year programs (3.0 credits) and meet daily. More info here.

The SPS recently launched a new webpage to make it easier for families, staff, and students to learn more about its proposed phased approach to bringing back prek-1 and students enrolled in Special Education Intensive Service Pathways to buildings starting March 1.

AAMA Listen and Learn Forum Feb. 9 |
The SPS Office of African American Male Achievement (AAMA) is launching its Listen and Learn forum in February to continue to listen to Black families to help reconstruct the educational system to celebrate the brilliance and excellence of Black boys and teens.
AAMA is committed to the long journey of dismantling a legacy of systemic racism. Black families are invited to participate and collectively envision what an educational environment looks like for Black boys and teens to thrive. Your voice will help build the office's intentional, long-term plan.
Among the AAMA's regional events are the forums for Northwest Families (including Ballard) from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9 and Central Families (including Queen Anne/Magnolia) on Friday, Feb. 12.

SPS Planning for Inclement Weather and Snow Days |
Planning for winter weather in 2020-21 is different this year. With remote learning, changes to school schedules because of winter weather will be unlikely.
In the event of an extreme weather-related power or an outage impacting large numbers of families and staff, the district will close and cancel all buildings, services, and remote learning. Learn more about how to stay informed.

Learning hubs offered for SPS students |
The facilities offer a stable, productive environment by providing Wi-Fi access to SPS’s virtual learning portals, along with recreational, enrichment and mentoring programs and in-person assistance with connectivity and academics. Participants must wear mask and bring laptop or tablet. Breakfast and lunch are provided daily.
Hub sites are open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and run until June 18. Register here.

TIPS Summer Internship application is open for students ages 15-19 who are interested in working for not-for-profit causes!
Teens In Public Service (TIPS) is a not-for-profit dedicated to developing future leaders committed to their communities. TIPS selects teenage leaders for paid community service internships and pairs them with charitable organizations over the summer.

UW Spring evening enrichment courses |
The University of Washington is excited to announce its spring evening enrichment courses (not for credit) for high school students.
Classes starting in late March include:

Project ALVA helps future Huskies reach STEM goals |
The University of Washington GenOM Project ALVA Program is now accepting applications through Feb. 26.
The ALVA Program is an outreach program focused on supporting low-income, first generation, and students underrepresented in life science and other STEM majors in reaching their academic and career goals.
Students that participate in this summer program/internship opportunity have an experience that helps prepare them for the competitive programs of study at UW.
In addition to the summer program, students continue to work with program advisors throughout the year to tailor schedules for academic success.
If you are a graduating senior interested in science, and have applied to the University of Washington Seattle, this may be the program for you!

Seattle Architecture Foundation Youth Workshops |
Seattle Architecture Foundation 2021 Youth Workshops are being offered via Zoom for youth 11-16, from February through April.
Hosted virtually by local architectural offices and supported by SAF staff and volunteer architects, participants learn as they plan, build, and present solutions to imaginative and thought-provoking design challenges.
