Dear friends, 


All clergy in the South County Interfaith Clergy Group are on a rotation to write an article for the local paper.  Here’s the article I wrote for this week:


Can Faith Make a Difference?


The MLK Jr. Interfaith Service at St. Mary’s in Gilroy earlier this month was a beautiful example of why different faith traditions bother to take the time to come together when we are so different.  The truth is that our differences can make our similarities stand out when we gather for a common purpose.  Martin Luther King Jr. was the leader of the civil rights movement that challenged our nation to make good on its statement in the Declaration of Independence:


“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”


Dr. King said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.”  It was his faith that drove him to act on his passionate conviction.  He shared his dream because he had the audacity to have hope that the dream could become a reality. In his sermon “Shattered Dreams” he once again stressed the importance of faith: “Our capacity to deal creatively with shattered dreams is ultimately determined by our faith in God”. 


Martin Luther King, Jr., a Christian Baptist preacher, was honored and celebrated by people of many different faith traditions in that service because at the end of the day, we all share a common thread.  In spite of our differences, at the core of all our faiths is love.  There is some form of ‘Love your neighbor’ in most religions and that is what unites us.   


We Episcopalians corporately renew our Baptismal Covenant several times a year.  From The Book of Common Prayer, the bishop or priest asks the congregation a series of questions and one of my favorites is, “Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?”  And the congregation responds with, “I will with God’s help.”

That’s the faith part, ‘ . . .with God’s help’. In other words, we don’t and can’t do it alone.  God’s help is manifested in the people who come together for a common purpose that benefits the common good.  


I do believe that faith makes a difference in the work we do as people who strive to ‘love our neighbor’.  Abiding in that one tenet of faith that we all share in common can change the world – one person, one church, one community at a time.

  St. Stephen’s church doors will be open every Sunday for worship. In-person services will continue to alternate with St. John’s but the live-stream from services at St. John’s will be projected at St. Stephen’s. Come to St. Stephen’s every Sunday!

Donations for people impacted by the severe weather:


Santa Marie Urban Ministry (SMUM) takes food, clothing, essential items like toiletries, new underwear, etc. . . year round.   


Compassion Center in the South Valley is in need of:

-men’s boxer briefs

-women’s underwear 

-women’s and men’s socks

-travel size shampoo

-plastic grocery bags (can be used by must be clean and not torn).


You can leave your donations at St. Stephen’s (Tues. or Thurs. morning) and someone from St. John’s will deliver them to Compassion Center.




Mana Bags for Santa Maria Urban Ministry


St. John and St. Stephen’s will collaborate to put together 100 Mana bags to be distributed by Santa Maria.


We will get together at my home on March 6th for a pot luck while we put the bags together.


If you can’t join us but want to help, you can buy an Amazon gift card to purchase items you would like to donate. Have the items delivered to my address: 198 Giddings Ct, San Jose, Ca, 95139


If you order an Amazon gift card from me the church gets a percentage and I can order the cards and have them in less than 30 minutes. Make the checks out to St. Stephen’s.

When I thanked her for


spending her precious 

Saturday with 

Catherine and I hauling

poisonous plants,


for freeing space for

fruit trees and light, 

solving a problem I’d 

struggled with for months, 


Jill ducked her head and said:

-Jill for taking away two loads of Oleander trimmings, all the garden volunteers for their help in cleaning up scraps, and Dan, Andy, Janet, and Wanda for offering their curbs as drop-off locations for yard waste. Thanks to Jessica for leading the way!

-Susan and Janet for doing a deep cleaning up of the sacristy!
