School-Linked Services Coordinator connects MUSD families with valuable resources
|
School-Linked Services Coordinator Nicole Steward was honored with a Certificate of Commendation from the County Board of Supervisors for her exceptional service and unwavering commitment to making a positive impact for Milpitas children and families.
"She's a strong advocate for the Milpitas community, particularly for McKinney-Vento children and children who have been through a lot of trauma," said Daniel Cao, policy aide for County Supervisor Otto Lee.
As MUSD’s SLS Coordinator, Steward fosters community partnerships and coordinates linkage of community services and resources among students and families; plans, implements and evaluates family engagement events and projects; and facilitates the Campus Collaborative to actively engage school personnel, students, family members, caregivers, service providers, community members and stakeholders. A majority of Steward's position is funded through the County.
“It’s the job of the educators, the teachers, principals, and assistant principals to make sure students get educated and they graduate,” Steward explained. “It’s my job to see if there are any barriers to that education and then I work with our community groups, parents and schools to remove those barriers so students can focus on their learning and be successful. It’s really a beautiful partnership."

Principal's Report: Calaveras Hills HS staff keeps students on track for graduation
|
|
“There wasn’t a student who did not receive either encouragement and kudos or prompting to get assignments completed or a social-emotional check-in,” said Stice, whose staff of teachers, counselor and administrators sent thousands of texts to students throughout the 2020-21 school year. They also followed up with phone calls to families, offered In-Person Learning, and hosted virtual in-person meetings.
As a result, student attendance averaged between 97 and 99 percent for all 10 months with 85 percent graduating on time, four in line for summer graduation, four Resource Specialist Program (RSP) students in a fifth year, and six more seniors directed to other alternatives such as Milpitas Adult Education.
