Positively Speaking

Living the New Normal of COVID 19

This has been quite a year for all of us. It has been a year of transition and change with several national and global crises. The corona virus is the major issue but there are four others – the economy, race, politics and climate changes. We all have had to make adjustments.

This really calls for adaptability and flexibility and resilience.
In this year of COVID 19, here are some questions to ask:
what positive changes have we made? Which relationships have gotten closer? What new skill or learning has propelled us to stretch and grow?

In presenting global webinars on dealing with COVID 19 and hearing
from participants, I feel that we are truly “all in this together” and we
all have the same basic needs and emotions. I have come up with five
areas vital to moving through this challenging time.

1.Routines- There is a gap between what we can and can’t control and
this brings us discomfort. The more we know, the more we have
structure and routines, the safer and more secure we feel.

2.Communication – This is a great opportunity to really hear and listen
to our loved ones. This means listening with empathy letting other
speak freely and listening from their perspective without judgement.

3.Self-Care – During this time of crisis, we need to strive for balance.
Exercise, good nutrition, mindfulness, relaxation, and focusing on
problem solving will make such a difference in our attitude, energy and
motivation

4.COVID 19 News – The news can recycle and listening over and over
can put us on overload and overwhelm. We need to stay with the facts
and limit our news intake.

5.New Normal – Accepting and working through the loss we feel from
“the way it was”, will help us to release and start again.
