If you follow sparkling wine news, you know England is the new hot spot for cool climate bubbles. The temperate maritime climate, when coupled with sunny, south-facing sites, has become warm enough in recent decades to fully ripen grapes, while retaining the high-acid essential for making quality sparkling.

More than a few French Champagne Houses are exploring the terroir of the chalky coastal ridges of southern England. In fact, if you follow those white cliffs of Dover down the geological map, you'll discover that it is the same chalk soil formation that rises to the surface again further south in Champagne.

Christine and the late Mike Roberts saw the potential for sparkling wines from East Sussex over 20 years ago, long before LVMH and the rest of the Champenoise. They pioneered the region by founding Ridgeview in 1995 and today they are among the best of the best producers.

The Brits have always been big consumers of bubbly. And now, they are becoming bone fide producers too, making it in the same traditional method as Champagne, and with the same grapes - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. If you long for bubbles, like I do, pouring anything sparkling as often as possible, I really think you would love our Ridgeview "Bloomsbury" Brut NV.

Ridgeview
"Bloomsbury" Brut Non-Vintage
$55.95 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6

"The Bloomsbury was disgorged in November 2019. This is the signature cuvée from Ridgeview, and it was served to the Queen at her official Diamond Jubilee celebration. It is always a reliable performer, bursting with citrus lemon, lime, freshly sliced melon and honeysuckle. The energetic palate revives the senses, thanks to a vibrant line of acidity that imparts almost a steeliness toward the finish (not unlike a Blanc de Blancs.) This is great introduction to the delights of Ridgeview and indeed to English sparkling wine. 2020-2027."

"60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 10% Pinot Meunier. Lovely saline nose, with subtle florality. Nectarine, green apple and marzipan complexity, with well defined flavours and clarity."
