 The School Board of Orange County held a special board meeting at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center while also utilizing virtual conferencing Friday, July 17. These are the highlights of the meeting:
School Board approves 2020-21 Florida's Optional Innovative Reopening Plan (6 to 2) to include an Innovative model called OCPS LaunchEd@Home. The School Board also agreed to seek a waiver from the state to allow local discretion regarding the start of school, based on local data. The start date is, tentatively,
Friday, August 21.
Parents will be allowed to make the choice for their child's instructional model.
Choices include:
- Face-to-Face - On campus, regular schedule, five days a week as required by the state in an emergency order.
- OCVS Virtual - A fully accredited OCPS school for 10 years. This provides location, time and pace flexibility.
- Innovative - OCPS LaunchEd@Home provides live stream for each class, following a traditional bell schedule. This option provides location flexibility, while also offering continuity of student experience and campus connections, as well as wrap-around support services.
Below is a comparison of the three instructional models that parents can choose from for the fall semester, which will tentatively start
Friday, August 21.
The Choice Registration Form is now available (link just below) and will be open until July 24. If the registration process is not completed by
Friday, July 24, the student will be registered to attend their zoned or assigned school utilizing the
Face-to-Face instructional model.
This Innovative Plan will be submitted to the state for approval. The waiver request will also be submitted. In the meantime, a choice registration survey will begin today for parents to choose one of the three learning models. To maximize safety efforts, we encourage parents to select the OCPS LaunchEd@Home, if able to keep their child at home. An assignment preference survey will also be sent to teachers to indicate which model they prefer to work in.

2020 Fall Sports Season is Scheduled to Begin As Usual
|
|
The Sports Screening Physical Exam of student athletes is required and the results shall be provided to the LNMS athletics department designee (LNMS Athletic Director: Irimar Hernandez) annually in accordance with FHSAA rules and guidelines. Physicals must be performed by a medical provider licensed in the State of Florida with no family relation to the student athlete. The physical packet is attached (page 1 is displayed below).

Both our boys and Lady Knights typically earn playoff spots throughout the year in multiple sports thanks to some very competitive Knight athletes and our excellent athletics department!

While no decision has been made about what next school year will look like, we do know many of you have had inquiries and questions about virtual school options for your child.
You may not be aware but Orange County Public Schools has run its own virtual school for ten years.
Orange County Virtual School is an option for full and part-time instruction for all students' kindergarten through 12th grade. If you are wondering if Orange County Virtual is right for your child, there is a lot of information on their website, where you will find a message from the principal, answers to frequently asked questions, and how to attend virtual information sessions.

Immunizations for 6th Graders going into 7th Grade

The State of Florida requires all incoming 7th graders to have the Tdap Immunization on the Florida 680 Health Form prior to the start of school. (

If Lake Nona Middle School does not have the 680 Health Form with the Tdap immunization included on the form, your child will NOT be able to sign out their laptops and/or receive their class schedule for the 2020-21 school year until the updated form is received.

LNMS recommends that ALL students participate in summer reading activities sponsored by OCPS, OCLS, and LNMS! The OCPS programs run to Aug. 10.

LNMS will also be offering prizes randomly for usage of Beanstack. It's easy - all you have to do is track the number of minutes you read throughout the summer!

An Easy Way To Stay Calm During The Pandemic? Read.
Many Lake Nona parents and community members may not realize how reading can help besides just improving one's mind. Did you know that quieting anxiety is one reason you should find books to read?
Reading isn't just a way to learn. It also has a calming effect. A University of Liverpool study of 4,000 adults showed readers were less stressed and depressed. And that makes them better ready to cope with challenges.
The study confirms what health professionals have long thought. Nurses during World War I turned to bibliotherapy to ease the stress of injured soldiers.
The Library of Congress and the American Library Association created the U.S. Library War Service. The program collected more than 700 million books and magazines for American troops to help them heal from the traumas of war. Nurses believed reading calmed the soldiers and improved their chances of emotional recovery.
We hope our Knights have already been doing some reading for pleasure by this point in July, but even if you are not one of our students and given all that is going on in the news, consider picking up a good book to read this week!

Remembering Congressman Lewis and his love of reading & education

Georgia Congressman John Robert Lewis was born in Troy, Alabama, in 1940 and grew up in a family of sharecroppers. Mr. Lewis came along during the era of segregation in the South and worked very closely with Dr. King at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Sadly, he passed away Friday from pancreatic cancer at the age of 80 this past Friday.
Like so many successful African American leaders, Congressman Lewis knew the value of getting an education. He once spoke about the importance of books in his life and said:
"I had a wonderful teacher in elementary school who told me: 'Read, my child, read,' and I tried to read everything. I love books!"
What many Americans may not know is that John Lewis earned multiple degrees. He earned a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy from Fisk University, and he is a graduate of the American Baptist Theological Seminary, both in Nashville, Tennessee. He has been awarded over 50 honorary degrees from prestigious colleges and universities throughout the United States, including Harvard University, Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Duke University, Morehouse College, Clark-Atlanta University, Howard University, Brandeis University, Columbia University, Fisk University, and Troy State University.
