Color Beyond Description is now on view at Provincetown Art Association and Museum through November 3. This exhibition features the work of Charles Hawthorne, Hans Hofmann and Paul Resika, artists who each used color to striking effect. Hawthrone is renowned as the great teacher of the early Provincetown Art Colony. He painted with both oil and watercolors, with his watercolors in particular demonstrating the movement of color and form. Hofmann is also known for his use of color in his crayon drawings and watercolor paintings. It's in those mediums where his use of color in space is at its most fluid. Resika, a student of Hofmann's, is a colorist painter who combines the techniques of both Hofmann and Hawthorne with his own eye for vibrant color and use of gouache alongside watercolor. The work of these three artists comes together in Color Beyond Description as a feast for the eyes sure to captivate any viewer. From today through October 25, Bannister Gallery at Rhode Island College will be showing Copernicus. Curated by Jenny CHEN Jiaying and Frank WANG Yefeng, this exhibition is inspired by Nicolaus Copernicus's "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres," published in 1543. It was the first book to challenge the idea of geocentrism, or the belief that the earth was the center of the universe. By extension, it brought forth the idea that humanity is not the center of the universe, either. Copernicus was the first of many theorists who would examine and re-evaluate humanity's role in the universe, and society continues to grapple with this exploration today. Copernicus brings together artists, including Elliot Dodd, LaTurbo Avedon, Stine Deja and the art project Slime Engine, to provide a new perspective on the world and humanity. The exhibit dissects technology, geopolitics, nature and society to question anthropocentrism, centralization, and other ideas common among humans. Copernicus aims to challenge viewers and have them think about the modern equivalents of the same questions that Copernicus asked hundreds of years ago. Montserrat College of Art has two exhibitions on view through early November. See You Forever, on view through November 2, is a group show featuring the work of Theresa Anderson, Tom Maio and Quay Quinn Wolf. The exhibit explores time, memory and impermanence, with a title that's not a statement, but a question: Can anything last forever? How do memories change over time, and what happens when they fade away? See You Forever asks the viewer this and more. Also on view is Anthony Goicolea: Pose through November 9. Goicolea explores the stranger side of portraiture, with pieces that are sometimes beautiful and sometimes intentionally grotesque. The figures in these portraits are both revealing and secretive, telling and hiding volumes with coded body language. Goicolea grew up Cuban, Catholic and gay in the Deep South in the early 70's, giving him an acute awareness of social constructs and identity politics that come through in his work. Both See You Forever and Anthony Goicolea: Pose seek to challenge viewers, whether that be in terms of memory or identity.
