Christian Education Class Series: Eighth-Day Discipleship: A New Vision for Faith, Work & Economics with Richard H. Bliese
Take the Class. Meet the Author.
Grow in Discipleship.
|
|
Richard H. Bliese in his book, and in this class, “draws on the historic architecture of eight-sided churches to call attention to an important but often overlooked emphasis on the eighth day of creation. Early Christians were focused on God's new creation that began in Christ's resurrection on Sunday, the first day of the week. But these Christians understood resurrection as the continuation of God's creative and redemptive activity. So the first day of the week became the eighth day of creation, and therefore the day of resurrection work and time to join with Christ in transforming the world. Christian disciples do this work by living out their baptismal vocations, especially in their daily work and through their ethical economic choices.”
|
|
Taught By Richard H. Bliese
“An accomplished leader, teacher, innovator, and visionary with extensive ministerial experience on three continents, forty years of church leadership, nonprofit and entrepreneurial experience in over fifteen different organizations, and deep teaching and consulting expertise nationally and internationally in theological education and congregational ministry. He is the editor, with Craig Van Gelder, of The Evangelizing Church: A Lutheran Contribution.”
|
|
When: Tuesdays, for six weeks, February 21-March 28, 2-3:30pm.
Preparation: Purchase and begin to read Richard’s book, ISBN 978-1506478838, available on Amazon.

Special Invitation to the Congregation:
Harvest House Tour
|
|
Come and tour the new Harvest House Life Enrichment Campus See the impact of SAKLC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Thank Offering. Sign-up sheet available in the Narthex.
Tuesday, February 7th at 1:00pm
3650 17th Street, Sarasota, the corner of 17th and N. Beneva Road
In commemoration of SAKLC’s 50th Anniversary in 2018, the church raised over $77,000 as a Thank Offering, specifically intended to help address youth homelessness in our community. Harvest House was selected to receive the funds for construction of a playground (~$30,000) at one of their three family housing campuses with the balance (~$47,000) going to their capital campaign for a new $2.5 million Life Enrichment Campus to create space conducive to learning and therapy. Both projects were to serve those residing in the greater Newtown area and hopefully significantly augment Harvest House’s already impressive impact on the local problem of youth homelessness.
The Life Enrichment Campus project is now essentially complete. The project involved construction of a new 11,000 sq ft building and repurposing the existing 5,000 sq ft building. The new campus now comprises four classrooms, two private spaces for community partners and therapy, a 4,500 sq ft multipurpose space, two childcare spaces for different ages, a catering kitchen, and seven administrative offices. Classes offered include financial literacy, parenting development, communication, job training, fitness & nutrition, art therapy & appreciation.
As Harvest House states: “With the introduction of the new campus, Harvest House is on the brink of a transformation. This building development will be the first infrastructure expansion that is exclusively focused on the wrap-around support services that are so crucial to client success The Life Enrichment Campus will be a highly visible pillar of strength for people who are looking for purpose, home, health, and community. It will be an open door for anyone needing help or access to resources such as supportive housing, affordable housing, food, life-skills classes, addiction recovery, and more.”
The playground was completed in September 2020. It is located at 2331 Mango Ave. behind the Harvest House Youth Drop-In Center and one of their family
housing unit campuses. Erin Minor, Harvest House CEO, sent pictures of the new playground saying “we’ve already had multiple parents tell how wonderful it has been for their children, especially for children who are attending virtual school. They now have a place to play. Couldn’t have been better timing!”

Salvation Army Bell Ringers Thank You Note
|
|
Salvation Army Bell Ringers,
Once again your performance was outstanding. We had 90 people sign up to ring in 102 two hour time slots. 24 people rang more than once. Gail Fowler was the big time winner, ringing 5 times. She was followed by 6 people who rang 4 times.
At the Salvation Army Appreciation Luncheon, SAKLC was recognized for having one of the top three kettles in Sarasota County for the last five years. This year we were the top kettle with $49,000 plus change.
I thank all the ringers for their devotion to this cause. It takes a big group to accomplish this mission. I have been organizing the project for 5 years and would love to have others help in the recruitment. One of the big jobs is to be at both services from the middle of November through the last Sunday before Christmas. Please contact me if you are available during that time frame and would be willing to help sign ringers up. All you need to do is smile and engage with the people. The rest is easy.
I owe Nina a big THANK YOU for all she does to make my life easier during the season of Christmas. She has been such a willing helper. God bless all of you for the time you put into this very worthwhile program. Looking forward to next year.
-Jane Wittlinger
