We are in the final days of our St. Brendan Fun Run FUNdraiser! We will conclude with our Fun Run this Friday October 22nd.  It’s going to be a FUN experience for ALL students! We reached the $25,000 mark in our fundraiser which means students have earned their incentive of turning me into a human ice cream sundae after the run on Friday. If we reach the $28,000 mark by Friday, students will also get to turn our PE teacher, Mr. F, into a human ice cream sundae also. Be sure to get those pledges in!

How can you help?

  • Register on mybooster.com!  Our goal is to get 100% of our school registered. (Need help: CLICK HERE for a how-to)
  • SHARE your student’s donation link with friends & family!
  • Donate if you are able to.

Keep up the good work sharing your student's donation link. Also note that many companies do match donations, so we urge you to take advantage of that! Thank you for supporting St. Brendan School!

Mid-Trimester progress reports (grades 2-8) will be sent home Friday, October 22nd.

Blessings,
Catherine Shumate
Catholic Corner
The seven Corporal Works of Mercy and seven Spiritual Works of Mercy, are actions and practices to be fulfilled by faithful Catholics. Through these works, we come to the aid of our neighbor in his bodily and spiritual necessities. The basis for these works can be found in Jesus’ command to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22: 37-40), as well as in His comments in Matthew 25:41, 6:14 and 18:15. Jesus tells us we risk damnation if we don’t-among other things- give drink to the thirsty, food to the hungry, and shelter for the homeless; because if we don’t do it for the least of his people, we don’t do it for Him. Jesus calls us to see God in all those we meet; to love, respect, and care for our fellow man.

Each month we will examine a Corporal and Spiritual Work of Mercy, and discuss how we can practice these Works. The Corporal Work for this month is Bury the Dead

During the early church, when bodies of martyrs were thrown into the streets like garbage, Christians found it necessary to recover the bodies of these holy people and give them a respectful and proper burial. For Catholics, burial of the deceased is not only a sign of respect but also connected to our belief in the resurrection of the body. Being part of a proper burial, either by attending a funeral or helping with the funeral, not only maintains the deceased person's human dignity it is also a service to the survivors. Further, it benefits the Church and broader culture by offering ritual and meaning when people need it most. Another way that we can help with burying the dead, is to help care for their burial place: helping with grounds upkeep, cleaning headstones, planting flowers, etc.

The Spiritual Work of Mercy which pairs well with this Corporal Work is to pray for the living and the dead. We can pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory anytime, but it is especially relatable to do so any time you drive past a cemetery, by reciting the Eternal Rest Prayer. We can attend a funeral and pray for the deceased and their loved ones on Earth. Especially during the month of November, during the octave of All Saints Day, special indulgences can be given to those in purgatory by visiting a cemetery and praying for the dead.

St. Brendan School is not able to participate in our usual Cemetery Clean up, due to Covid restrictions. However, this year we are able to (Spiritual Work of Mercy) visit the graves of the dead to pray for them as well as pray for the Souls in Purgatory in the Chapel. We will be doing this on Saturday November 6, at Holyrood Cemetery at 12 PM. More information to come!

Great ShakeOut Tomorrow
St. Brendan School staff and students will be participating in the Great ShakeOut on Oct. 21. While earthquake hazard varies from region to region, most of Washington is prone to earthquakes. The Great Washington ShakeOut  is a statewide opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes: “ Drop, Cover and Hold On.” The ShakeOut has also been  organized to encourage  you, your community, your school, or your organization  to review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies, and to  secure your space   in order to prevent damage and injuries.

What we do now will determine our quality of life after our next big earthquake. Are you prepared to survive and recover quickly?

Speech Club! Grades 6-8
Calling all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students!
Do you want to gain confidence in your public speaking while having a great time with your classmates? Do you want to earn scholarship money for high school?
Speech club tournaments are right around the corner. With a variety of speech categories available, there is a category for everyone.
Practices will be after school on Fridays. First meeting: Friday, October 22nd, from 3:15-4:30. Come one, come all! This meeting is short notice as the first speech tournament will be in early November, so we want to get started right away. This will be an informational meeting, so even if you are unsure, we encourage you to come.

Cost is $15 per student to join. Please send payment to school office Attn: Speech Club or bring to first practice. Checks can be paid out to "St. Brendan School". There will also be an entry fee per category at each tournament. These fees vary by school but are generally $5-$8 per student category and will be collected later when we register for the tournaments. The Speech Club registration form is attached.

Volunteers needed! Parent volunteers are essential to making Speech Club a success! Volunteers may be needed for practices - stay tuned for more details. This year's tournaments are virtual, so students will be competing via recorded video submissions. Parents help with taping students' presentations and tournament judging will be needed.
For more information, please contact Sarah Cullen, cullensarahjane@gmail.com (mother of Jojo in 4th grade).
Blessing Bag Donations - Student Store
As part of our charitable giving, Student Store wants to send every St. Brendan student home with a Blessing Bag to give out over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Blessing Bags are gallon-size Ziploc® bags that contain snacks, travel-size toiletries, socks, a bottle of water, grooming supplies, and other items that people who live on the street find useful. Bags are kept in your car, so when you encounter a person who is experiencing homelessness, you can offer the bag to them.

Please help us by donating items listed below . If you would prefer to donate cash, Student Store will go out and buy the supplies to build the bags as well. We would love bulk items, so if you have access through your work or friends, we would really appreciate those times.

To donate any of the items listed below, please place them in the box outside the office marked Blessing Bags by November 15th. If you would like to donate money, please send your cash or check to Theresa Loughlin C/O Student Store to the office.

Thank you for your help to bring help to those in need this holiday season.
Sincerely,
St. Brendan Student Store

CYO Basketball Update
The state considers basketball a “high-risk sport” because it takes place indoors and athletes are in close contact. Due to these, the CYO 4-8th Basketball program start date has been pushed back to January.  All Basketball games (CYO, Parish, School, Rec league) will not be allowed on Parish/School property within the Archdiocese of Seattle until January, when the proper protocols and processes are set up.  (This is also an insurance matter since all sports must follow the same rules when on parish/school property.) We will re-examine this in the coming weeks and provide an update for you.
Calling Parent Photographers - Pictures Wanted
Please send any CYO soccer or XC pictures to christenl@school.saintbrendan.org. Photos will be used on social media and in the yearbook. Thank you!
