“I’ve got spirit, yes I do! I’ve got spirit, how ‘bout you?” Remember that cheer from when we were in school? It’s Homecoming Week at Langley, and the school spirit is contagious!
Excitement has been building throughout the week as students bonded over outfitting themselves--in jerseys, pajamas and Hawaiian shirts--to coordinate with the day’s theme. It all culminates with tomorrow’s blackout day, when the students will wear their matching black HOCO shirts to school and the football game. Cheer on our Saxons as they battle the Wakefield Warriors and be entertained by our award-winning band!

The Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday in the Courtyard and Langley Hall from 8:30 – 11 pm. Tickets are still available through MySchoolBucks. Although outside guests are not permitted this year, all Langley students are encouraged to attend. Dates are not required, and students frequently go in groups with friends. These groups often gather together before the dance, giving eager parents the chance to snap a few photos!
As you encourage your child to participate in Langley’s spirit week, show your school spirit by joining the PTSA today! Your membership dollars and donations support students, teachers and families and help make Langley the enriching environment that it is!

The Marching Saxons gave an historic performance while competing last Saturday in the Stafford Showcase at Stafford HS! The band's performance of their show Looking Back, Moving Forward won several captions in their class: 1st place Music, 1st place Visual, 1st place General Effect and 1st place Overall in their class. Moreover, the Marching Saxons were named Grand Champion of the entire competition, meaning they earned the highest overall score out of every band there. This is a first in Langley history! They also received 2nd place color guard and 2nd place percussion out of all the bands.
Band Director Doug Martin said that he’s incredibly proud of his students. “They have worked so hard, and in spite of having really two new classes participating in marching band given the last school year, this group of students has come together. We aim to keep improving over the course of the season, and it’s always fabulous to do well in competition, but most important to me was that it was a great performance – unquestionably our best of the season so far!”

Popular fashion guru and Department Chair for Career and Technical Education, Tricia Poythress, has been at LHS for 22 years and in FCPS for 32 years. Mrs. Poythress provides a huge amount of inspiration and support to her marketing students, who are known to keep in touch with her for years after graduation, sharing their career and life highlights and often returning for advice. No wonder she was chosen Langley’s 2020 Outstanding Teacher!
Mrs. Poythress grew up in Virginia Beach and has an undergraduate degree in Marketing and Business and a graduate degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech. She always wanted to be a teacher and loves fashion, so this is her perfect career.
She has a 16-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son who keep her very busy. She is the team mom for her daughter’s cheer, gymnastics and lax teams, as well as the travel coordinator for her son’s baseball team. In her time away from sports, she enjoys watching movies with her husband, dining out with her girlfriends and cuddling with her English bulldog, Muffin.
Her words of wisdom are: When you choose a career, be sure that you are passionate about it. Nothing is worse than spending 40+ hours a week for 25+ years doing something that you don’t enjoy. If you love your job, the years will fly by. After 32 years, it’s obvious that she loves what she does.
