the latest news about Business Incubators and Accelerators from across New York State
July 2021 NYS Incubator Report
Coworking, incubators and accelerators… what’s the difference?
From working out of a garage to relocating for an industry-specific accelerator program, startups have more options than ever about where to work and how to build their businesses. Among the most popular are coworking spaces, business incubators and accelerators.
You might think these terms are interchangeable, or that they are simply buildings or workspaces. While they often do offer space, the true purpose of all three is to provide entrepreneurs with services necessary for growth. And although they are all designed around the same mission, key differences separate them.

Rev: Ithaca Startup Works opens applications for the first cohort of its Hardware Accelerator program

Applications  are now open and will be accepted on a rolling basis until October 2021, when the program begins. To be eligible for the 60-week program, participants must have a fully functional prototype and a confirmed customer market. They do not need to leave their current incubators or relocate to Ithaca, NY to participate as the majority of programming will be hosted virtually, but we will introduce them to opportunities within upstate New York's entrepreneurship ecosystem. The program is free and takes no equity—it is funded by the Economic Development Association.

NYU Urban Future Labs Startup raises $16M Series B

Sealed, a startup that helps homeowners overcome cost barriers to efficiency upgrades and electrification, just raised $16 million to fuel its expansion into more states.
Why it matters: Many important climate tools rely on the far wider deployment of well-known methods and concepts — in this case upgrading homes to waste less energy.
Homes account for an estimated 20% of U.S. carbon emissions, and they can be lowered by addressing leaks and installing modern equipment.

House committee backs new manufacturing office, increases for FAST and clusters

The House Committee on Appropriations advanced its first FY 2022 funding bills this week. Included in the financial services bill was $10 million for each of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s three main innovation programs: Regional Innovation Clusters, Federal and State Technology Partnership (FAST), and Growth Accelerators Fund Competition. The bill also includes language supporting a new White House Office of Manufacturing and Industrial Innovation to coordinate cross-agency policy and programs.

Among SSTI’s Innovation Advocacy Council’s top legislative priorities are increased funding for the Regional Innovation Clusters and FAST programs, and the House’s proposed funding levels would be increases of $4 million and $6 million, respectively, above FY 2021. The amounts also match the White House’s budget proposal from earlier this year. Read more
