October 1, 2020

Please note that our Return to Learn Plan is an addendum to our Student Handbook.  There are a few items that have been updated to our Return to Learn Plan as recommended by the Diocese of Harrisburg:

LP-21 Quarantine & Communications
insert after 2nd to last paragraph, prior to health.pa.gov link:

This applies to those who have traveled to one of the listed states.  It does not apply to household members who did not travel to one of the listed states.  However, if the individual who is under quarantine develops any signs or symptoms or has a positive test result, their close contacts, including household members, should also quarantine.

York Catholic Fund
Did you know that donating to the York Catholic Fund is a great way to benefit all students? A gift to the YC Fund is an unrestricted gift that is critically important to the operation of the school. Your donation provides operating budget support, extracurricular support, and bridges the financial gap between tuition dollars and the actual cost per student. Every unrestricted gift, whatever the amount, is greatly valued by York Catholic. We know you are asked to give in many different ways; therefore, we appreciate your thoughtful consideration in giving to the YC Fund.

Tax Break for You
York Catholic is excited to share some information with you that is sure to change how you view paying your state and federal taxes each year!

If you pay personal state income taxes, you now have the opportunity (whether filing individually or jointly) to choose how these taxes are spent each year by joining a Special Purpose Entity (SPE). SPEs are based on tax liability, not income, therefore each taxpayer's situation will differ. An individual or couple filing jointly must have a state tax liability of $3,500 or more to participate. To see if you qualify for 2020, you can find your PA tax liability on Form PA-40 Line 12 of your 2019 tax return.

You could receive at least a 10% deduction on your personal federal taxes each year, so why not have your personal state income taxes serve as tuition assistance funds, allowing more students to thrive at York Catholic High School?
If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please follow these steps:
All SPE funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so NOW is the time to submit your Joinder Agreement for the 2020 Tax Year!

For more information about this easy tax donation, please contact Katie Seufert, York Catholic Principal, at [email protected].

Refer a Friend and You Win!
If you know a friend, family member or anyone looking for a high-quality, Christ-centered education for their children who do not already attend a Catholic school, you could receive a $250 credit toward your child's tuition at York Catholic.

York Catholic's Parent Referral Program is a win-win for everyone involved. Referred students receive an outstanding education from York Catholic, while parents of the referred families get peace of mind knowing their child is gaining so much more than just a top-notch education.  Families who refer someone who registers at York Catholic receive a $250 credit towards their child's tuition.

You, as parents, are our best ambassadors.  In order for the Parent Referral Program to be a success, we need information about individuals who may be interested in joining the York Catholic family. All you need to do is click here to fill out the form. If the family you refer attends York Catholic through their first semester, your family's tuition will be credited $250, spread into 4 credits applied to the months of February, March, April, and May.

The Parent Referral Program is open to all parents of current York Catholic students. Tuition credit is not available for referring your own children. $250 credit is only good toward tuition on student's account, no cash given, non-transferrable. Referred student applies only to a new student from a non-partner school.

Please click on the link above and allow us the opportunity to do what we love - help to develop, nurture and encourage children so they may grow in faith, mind, and heart. Mail or email the form to us and we will take it from there!

Thank you for all you do for our school!
Virtual Distance Learning Reminder
Families choosing our Virtual Distance Learning option are reminded to return their Amended Agreement to the main office by tomorrow, Friday, October 2.  Please refer the email you received from Mrs. Seufert through [email protected] on September 25 for complete details.
Christmas Cash is Back!
In order to maintain the lowest tuition fee possible, each family is asked to participate in 2 fundraisers per year (actual cost per pupil is over $10,000.00).

YC Christmas Cash calendars are being sold for $25 October 9-30.  Each calendar purchased will have a four-digit number and will enter the buyer in a daily drawing for the month of December.  Each day of December has a different payout assigned.  When we pull a purchaser's calendar number on a specific date in December, they will win the amount noted on that date (we are not using PA Lottery numbers).  Every purchaser has 31 chances to win, coordinating with the 31 days of the month.  Winners will be posted on the YC website at www.yorkcatholic.org, and will be notified by email.  The winner does not need to be present to win.  Winning amounts will be mailed weekly.

All orders will be placed online this year.  The link will be included in next week's Irish Eye e-newsletter and will be active on October 9.  Numbered calendars labeled with the purchaser's name will be sent home to the selling family for distribution after November 2.  Parents will be notified via email when calendars are being sent home.

Students will be learning about the fundraiser next week.  Detailed information about the raffle and prizes will be mailed home; please check your mailbox.

If you have any questions about the YC Christmas Cash calendar raffle, please contact Mrs. Gick at [email protected] or 717-846-8871 x317.

Thank you in advance for making this a successful fall fundraiser!

The homeroom collecting the most box tops will be rewarded!
Renaissance STAR Assessments
For many years, the students of the Diocese of Harrisburg in grades 3-8 took part in annual standardized achievement testing known as the Iowa tests, or ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills). Beginning this school year, however, the diocese is transitioning to the STAR Assessment from Renaissance. English and Math teachers will administer STAR tests to students in grades 7-9 during class time. These tests take only about twenty minutes each, are computer-adaptive, and provide us with results immediately. The goal of STAR assessments is to provide all of us with current, actionable information so we can ensure our classroom instruction meets the needs of our students.
Revised Schedule Reminder
We have been fortunate to be approved by the College Board to administer the SAT exam at York Catholic for YC seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The date, October 14, coincides with the same date our juniors are scheduled to take the PSAT.  Because of this, we have a few school calendar adjustments for October.

Friday, October 9, will now be a full school day instead of a half day.

Monday, October 12, we will still be closed for Columbus Day.

Wednesday, October 14, will be a full day for faculty and staff and no school for grades 7-10.  All 11th graders will have a half-day in the morning to take the PSAT (not optional), and 12th graders who registered will attend for a half-day in the morning to take the SAT (optional).

For best results on the PSAT and SAT, students should have a good night's rest and eat a good breakfast on testing day.  Students need to come prepared with #2 pencils as well as a graphic or scientific calculator.  The PSAT tests students on Reading, Writing, and Math, and is an invaluable practice test preceding the SAT.  Practice test manuals were distributed in homerooms last month, and juniors are encouraged to take time to become familiar with the test format.  Any questions regarding the test or scoring may be directed to Mrs. Eva Phillips in the guidance office at 717-846-8871 x432 or [email protected].

VERY IMPORTANT!  School districts will be providing busing to York Catholic the morning of October 14, but will not be providing busing home from York Catholic at the end of testing.  Students must make arrangements for their own transportation home from York Catholic on October 14.
College Admissions Information Night
A College Admission Information Night for families will be held at YCHS Thursday, October 22, at 6:30 PM.  Mrs. Eva Phillips, York Catholic College & Career Counselor, and Taylor Miller from St. Joseph's University, will review the college admission process, student transcripts, recommendation letters, and a student timeline. To register, contact Ms. Kathryn Dill at 717-846-8871 x354 or [email protected].
YC Athletics Ticket Policy & Livestreams
In light of new guidance offered from the Pennsylvania Department of Education on September 18, and the recent Federal Court ruling on the 25/250 gathering limits specific to high school athletics, York Catholic has amended its YC Athletics Ticket Policy as of Thursday, September 24, 2020.

The following is York Catholic's plan for attendance to fall sporting events.

Varsity Football Games, JV and Junior High Football Games, Boys and Girls Soccer Games, Girls Volleyball Games
We will allocate 2 tickets per YC student participant, per home game. The tickets will be given to the head coach/moderator to be given to each YC student participant.  Gates for each game will open 45 minutes prior to the start of the game.

Cross Country Meets and Golf Matches
Both sports are off of our property in public places. While we do not regulate our off-site venues, we ask that all of our spectators respect our host parks and courses and observe social distancing guidelines and Pennsylvania's face covering mandate. York Catholic fans are expected to follow the 2 people per player rule at these events.

Tennis Matches
Unfortunately, York Catholic was informed by Penn State York that, due to COVID-19, we could not use their courts for our home tennis matches this season. As a result, all matches will be away matches. Therefore, we need to follow the opposing teams' rules, which, as of now, do not allow for any away fans at tennis matches.

General Rules for Home YC Athletic Events
  • All fans will be asked COVID-19 screening questions before entering.
  • All fans MUST wear face coverings during the events on school property.
  • Spectators will not be permitted to stand outside the fence area and watch the games. Any spectator doing so will be asked to leave.
  • All spectators must remain in the designated bleacher/sitting areas.
  • Spectators may not stand on the blacktop track around turf or grass areas.
  • All spectators will be asked to leave immediately after a game is completed. No congregating or meeting the players on or around the field/gym will be permitted.
  • For outdoor events, use of indoor school facilities will not be available. Portable restrooms will be available at the field.
  • No concession stands will be open during the games. No outside food or beverages are permitted at games.
  • No visiting fans will be permitted.  York Catholic fans are also not permitted at away games.  This is a reciprocal agreement among all teams in the league.
  • Tickets are not transferable. Any tickets that will not be used must be returned to the student's head coach prior to the game.
  • There will be no re-entry to athletic events. Please be sure to bring everything from your vehicle that you will need during the event.
  • Stadium admission will be from the school-side gate only. The alley gate will not be used this season.
Livestreams
Home games will be livestreamed from the stadium and gymnasium. You will find the links on York Catholic's website, the York Catholic YouTube Channel, or by clicking here and saving to your Favorites:

Conclusion
This is and will be a fluid plan. We will continue to adjust as needed based on updated direction from the governing bodies (PA, PIAA, YAIAA). The safety protocols for all involved (participants, staff, and fans) are our first priority. The next priority is to give the students as many events as we can to get the full experience of middle and high school. We all understand having the support of parents, friends, and classmates is important to the students performing. At this time providing the students performing the experience they have earned is the goal. We ask all fans to comply with the rules and regulations we are under today so the students will not lose the opportunity of those experiences in the future.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
