Parents Love Our Pop-Up Day Camps
|
|
To assist parents during the labour dispute between teachers and the provincial government, Camp Kawartha is offering
Pop-Up Day Camps
during teacher strike days. These
Pop-Up Day Camps
provide affordable and valuable learning opportunities for children aged 6 to 12.
“The Camps have been well received by parents.”
stated our Environment Centre Manager, Craig Brant.
“The children can participate in engaging outdoor and nature-based programs as well as games and some free play during breaks. Parents are telling us that these Camps offer healthy and active learning opportunities for their kids and they appreciate our efforts.”
Visit our
Pop Up Nature Camps page
to get detailed information. Due to strike announcement timing, these Camps appear once strikes are
formally
announced. Full refunds are made if strike days are cancelled.

Animal Showcase - Wild Turkey
|
|
The turkey is most often associated with shopping lists at Thanksgiving or Christmas, but that main course is usually a domesticated bird, bred specifically for market. The wild turkey is a much more fascinating creature with features you may not know. Here’s a short
“wow, I did not know that!”
list:
- Male turkeys are called "toms" or “gobblers;” female turkeys are called "hens."
- Turkeys have a wingspan of up to six feet, which makes them the largest bird in their natural habitat of the open forest by far.
- The wild turkey’s bald head can change colour in seconds with excitement or emotion. The birds’ heads can be red (pink), white, or blue.
- Turkeys can fly and they roost up in trees at night to avoid predators – smart bird!
- Wild turkeys can run…and run fast – some have been clocked at up to 40 km per hour – as fast as Usain Bolt!
- Turkeys live in forests but, will mosey out into open fields and grasslands to feed.
- What do they eat? They are big on nuts, fruits, and won’t turn their noses up at worms or snails.
- Wild turkeys were extirpated in Ontario because of habitat loss and over-hunting. They are now a common sight due to concerted reintroduction efforts. This is a good news story! Yay!
