Vestry hard at work on strategic planning
Dear Friends,
Your Vestry spent a very intense day in a strategic planning retreat. We worked as hard as I have ever worked on zoom, with a consultant who specializes in strategic planning with corporations, schools, and churches. I was impressed by the vigor and commitment of your leaders.
We came up with five simple and succinct goals to be fleshed out in the next few weeks. These goals will be accompanied by Action Plans and Key Performance Indicators. Once all this initial planning is complete, the goals will be published and handed over to our seven councils, and we will begin our work.
The future is so unclear. So much is changing, but the faithfulness of our leadership remains steady and consistent. We are truly blessed.
In Christ’s love,
Kate+

Guest preacher Gary Jones this Sunday
Please join us in welcoming Rev. Gary Jones Sunday, October 24. Gary has been a priest for 36 years, serving in inner-city and suburban parishes in Tennessee, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. He helped establish Urban Ministry Centers in Knoxville, TN and Charlotte, NC, and he served as the bishop’s Canon for Social Ministries in Tennessee. Gary has also been a member of the Fellowship of the Society of St. John the Evangelist (SSJE), the oldest Episcopal monastic order, where he first learned ancient Christian contemplative practices and the ministry of spiritual direction.

Update on Stewardship Campaign activities
The Stewardship Campaign recently joined in on a Zoom call with the Worship, Music & Arts Council on Tuesday, October 19. So far, we have met with an array of ministries doing good work benefiting the neighborhood and cathedral communities. We had a wonderful luncheon with the Celebration Choir, which is back singing and performing. They recently led the “Blessing of the Animals” service on October 3.
We also had a nice visit with our Wednesday 12:10 p.m. service communicants. When they left the service we had a buffet filled with tea sandwiches and desserts and discussed why we love St. John’s so much, and why we give.
At each in-person gathering the participants leave with a goodie bag. If able, please prayerfully consider your 2022 pledge and send in your pledge card by Sunday, October 31. We will bless the cards during this special in-gathering service. So far, we have 105 pledge cards turned in. If you need a pledge packet, please let Pam Searcy, Stewardship Campaign manager know; (904) 632-9104, ext. 106 or e-mail at psearcy@jaxcathedral.org.
The Stewardship campaign made a “Gather to Give” appearance and helped bag more than 300 bags of nutritious grocery items benefiting the West Riverside Elementary school children. Our “Blessings in a Backpack” ministry will meet again on November 4 to pack more items. You are invited to join them.

LGBTQI and Friends Fellowship Group reception October 22 in Ingram Lounge
On Thursday, October 14, Tom Serwatka moderated an online meeting of the Fellowship Group to discuss the process for nominating and electing a bishop. Information was shared and a lively discussion ensued among the participants.
The group’s focus changes from business to fellowship this week. At 5:30 p.m. tomorrow evening, October 22, Dean Kate, Father Gee Alexander, and Tom Serwatka will host a Gather to Give reception in Ingram Lounge. All members of the St. John’s LGBTQI community and all allies are invited to join. Please think about anecdotes of when anyone in the St. John’s community reached out to our parish affinity group, including yourself, or to the LGBTQI community-at-large. Also be thinking of personal stories in which you have been able to help, or have been helped, by a friend or stranger.
