Dear Gesu Families,

The start of the third quarter brings excitement into our classrooms as students are introduced to new skills and explore new concepts. Below you will find brief overviews of what students will be introduced to this quarter in each content area. We are looking forward to seeing the personal growth of each student. Thank you for your continued partnership as we truly are one proud Gesu family.

Grade 8 Curriculum
Quarter 3
Religion
Students will continue to explore themes of community, acting as the Body of Christ and our Catholic Church and Identity. Students will construct a timeline of events that took place after Jesus’ resurrection and the history of how the Church came about from beginning to present day. 
ELA
Students will be introduced to “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee as they continue to study and analyze prejudice. Students will practice research skills in order to construct expository and persuasive writing pieces. Students will continue to practice grammatical structure and will transition into diagramming specific grammatical structures.
Enriched ELA
Students will continue their novel study of “To Kill A Mockingbird” but Harper Lee. Students will practice writing and editing skills by crafting and revising an argumentative essay about racism in America and how it connects to the novel.
Math
Students will continue to practice with elements of linear equations. Students will be introduced to systems of equations, including graphing, solving, writing and interpreting real world scenarios. 
Algebra
Students will be introduced to polynomials. Students will practice with polynomial computations in order to create a foundation for quadratic equations. 
Science
Students will continue to practice lab skills through the studies of genetics and energy.
Social Studies
Students will continue to explore topics related to the Constitution and government, including the historical writing of the Constitution, the role of government and the duties and responsibilities of citizens in the United States. Students will be introduced to the early years of the United States and the first presidents. 
Electives
Elective offerings this quarter include Spanish 1B, Video Game Design, Yoga and Meditation, History of Rock and Roll, and Entrepreneurship 1B.
