LEGACY PROJECT - SEASON I EPISODE 1

We are very excited to begin the showing of a six part series of interviews of JCC members who share their stories of LBI and the history of our synagogue along with our Rabbi and President giving insight into our future.
Thanks to Diane Buskirk for suggesting the project and to her daughter, Dr. Allison Buskirk Cohen, for being such an able interviewer.

HERB SHAPIRO
A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
This week we have the honor and privilege of reading the Ten Commandments given to the Israelites at Mount Sinai. If you read the Commandments in Hebrew you will notice that, despite the fact that God gave them to all of the Israelites standing under Sinai (in excess of 1 million people), the Commandments are given in the second person singular. In other words, when it says “I am the Lord your God”, “your” is in the singular form. (i.e., I am Moshe’s God; I am Miriam’s God; I am Zelda’s God; I am Herb’s God). Thus, even as the entire new nation is standing there hearing God’s voice, each Commandment is given to each individual.

We can posit any number of reasons why this is so; however, I would guess the most reasonable answer is that, by doing so, God is expressing that each of us is individually responsible to observe the Commandments. If presented in the plural, then each person could conceivably argue that certain Commandments don’t apply to him/her.

The story of the giving of the Ten Commandments and the understanding of the Commandments, themselves, can be very complicated. However, one short and simple message is that before we undertake to repair the world, we each have an obligation to do some inner considering and determine where we are, on a personal level, in this beautiful but complicated world of ours. Only after I have looked at myself and seen how well I have kept the Commandments, should I then feel licensed to start to look at what others are doing.

With regard to personal thought, reflection, mindfulness, and spirituality, I’d like to share the following. It was seen by my good friend, Ed Finkel, on the walls of Temple Israel, in Natick, Massachusetts:

Happy Moments,
Praise God;

Difficult Moments,
Seek God;

Quiet Moments,
Worship God;

Painful Moments,
Trust God;

Every Moment,
Thank God.

Shabbat Shalom – Rabbi Michael S. Jay

A great way to make a difference In Israel's future from the comfort of your home.
In Israel, access to the English language is really dependent on your economic status, and is English proficiency is the largest barrier to University entry for underprivileged students. Some of the members of our Synagogue have been mentoring a student through an organization called Israel Connect. This organization works with Israel's Ministry of Education to identify regions most in need, and works with the teachers to provide access to all students. Using Zoom, you can tutor a high school student in Israel from the comfort of your home. The whole interaction is enjoyable and simple, and it makes all the difference for the student. In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are also welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.
