Tips for Taking Your Dog Boating
Nothing is more exhilarating that the smell of the sea and the wind in your hair as you sail carefree under a warm sun. If you enjoy boating, there’s no reason not to take your best friend with you. After all, dogs love going places with their owners.

Most dogs enjoy water, they are instinctive swimmers and very few dogs are afraid of the water (except during bath time!). Nothing beats a warm summer day out on a boat with the companionship of your dog. Dogs are an important part of most families and a holiday just isn’t a holiday if you leave your first mate at home. Safety is important on a boat and it is especially important if you take your dog along with you. There are a few simple things you can do to make sure your day out on sea (or the lake) doesn’t turn into a scene from Titanic.

Let's start with the basics for what you need to know when taking your dog boating:
  1. Invest in a canine life jacket.
  2. Do not encourage your dog to drink water from the lake or sea.
  3. Consider purchasing and applying sunscreen for your dog.
  4. Have a plan in place when your dog needs to relieve himself or herself.

A Boater’s Guide to Marine Life Rescue
In 2020, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported 17 entangled whales off the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California, and other countries from U.S. commercial fishing gear.

CALIFORNIA一 A sunny day out on the water, a slight chop to the wave, and a clear view of Catalina across the horizon. A boater thinks they see something bobbing in the waves but they can’t quite determine if it is just a white cap or a piece of trash that accidentally dumped into the ocean. They get a little closer out of curiosity, and the idea of pulling out the trash before a marine animal can ingest it or become entangled in the piece of mankind that doesn’t belong in the ocean. It is too late; the piece of fishing gear has been tangled with a humpback whale that was on its way up the coast during its migration.

In its 2020 West Coast Whale Entanglement Summary, NOAA reported that there were 13 confirmed reports of whales entangled in some type of fishing gear off the California coast. But there are more than just whales living off the coast that have found themselves entangled in garbage, fishing lines, crab gear, and whatever else is in the ocean.

ADVENTURES IN PARADISE
Like a pale wraith, it came down softly from high on the jagged green ridge where the gods live, preceded only by errant puffs of warm, moist air. It enveloped our yacht, closing off the beach and the reef from view, and it pounded the calm bay into colorless slate, pockmarked by pellets of water. Standing under the cockpit awning as water cascaded off in hissing sheets, the sheer impact of this tropical deluge made it seem hard to breathe, as though the air was being sucked away by the falling rain.

But it departed as quickly as it had come, leaving behind dozens of tall waterfalls on the sheer mountain sides, while the coco palms along the beach glistened with silver in the sunlight. In the distance, a double rainbow arched over the reef, and the trade winds soon filled in with their warm softness.

I realized I’d been holding my breath…..

But then, the sheer beauty of French Polynesia had taken my breath away from the moment that I arrived in Tahiti for a week-long charter starting on the island of Raiatea. Stepping out of the cool airplane, you are struck by the almost palpable scent of flowers and the heavy cloak of humidity makes shorts and a light shirt worth any strange looks when passing through the San Francisco airport.
