MAY/JUNE 2021 | ISSUE 73
During the May Board meeting, the CFX Governing Board voted unanimously to approve the FY22-26 five-year, $3.2 billion work plan. A critical planning tool, CFX’s Five-Year Work Plan is used to effectively manage CFX roadway maintenance, improvements and system enhancements. CFX utilizes the workplan to address the growing transportation needs of Central Florida.

The $3.2 billion FY22-26 Five-Year Work Plan is the largest in agency history and is anticipated to create approximately 41,600 jobs in Central Florida over the next five years.

Highlights of the plan include the proposed SR 414 Expressway Extension, the SR 516 Lake-Orange Expressway, and the SR 538 Poinciana Parkway Extension. In addition, the plan incorporates capacity improvement projects to help eliminate congestion hot spots, major interchange projects like the Signature SR 528/436 Project, expressway resurfacing projects and CFX’s environmental sustainability program. CFX WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBERS
At CFX's May Board meeting, Governor Appointees, Rafael “Ralph” Martinez and Christopher “C.J.” Maier were welcomed to the CFX Governing Board.
At the recent May and June Board meetings CFX approved two SR 417 widening projects. The first project is the construction of the SR 417 widening project from Landstar Boulevard to Boggy Creek Road. CFX will widen the 3.6-mile segment of SR 417 from four to six lanes, widen four bridges, and construct four sound walls. This project is expected to begin in July of 2021 with estimated completion in late 2023.

The second project approved was the construction of the SR 417 widening project from Narcoossee Road to SR 528. CFX will widen the 4.7-mile segment of SR 417 from four to six lanes, widen five bridges, and construct four sound walls. This project is expected to begin in August of 2021 with estimated completion in early 2024.

The second of two new flyover ramps at the SR 528/SR 436 interchange is now open! The new ramps replace the old loop configurations at the interchange, providing smoother traffic flow through the interchange. They will also better accommodate increasing traffic near Orlando International Airport. On average, more than 50,000 vehicles a day pass through this interchange.

This latest flyover ramp takes drivers from southbound SR 436/Semoran Boulevard to eastbound SR 528/Beachline Expressway. Drivers should be aware that the new ramp entrance is nearly half a mile north of the old one. The first of the new ramps—from northbound SR 436 to westbound SR 528—opened in April.

CFX HOSTED WORKSHOP ON PROPOSED CR 532 WIDENING
In partnership with Osceola County, CFX is studying alternatives to guide the design of the proposed widening of CR 532/Osceola Polk Line Road. Approximately 50 people participated in the May 25 public workshop. Attendees at an in-person workshop at Reunion Resort and a simultaneous virtual workshop saw a presentation, viewed various alternatives, asked questions of the study team, and gave their input.

The proposed three-mile widening of CR 532, from South Old Lake Wilson Road/Lake Wilson Road to US 17-92, would improve roadway connections between the future extension of Poinciana Parkway and I-4.

E-ZPASS NOW ACCEPTED EVERYWHERE IN FLORIDA
E-ZPass, the popular toll transponder used in 17 states, is now accepted on all toll roads and most bridges throughout Florida! Due to a partnership with both CFX and Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (FTE), E-ZPass is accepted on all E-PASS and SunPass expressways. CFX became the first Florida member of the E-ZPass group in September 2018, and began accepting E-ZPass on all CFX expressways in Central Florida. Now, with FTE following suit, E-ZPass customers can travel on all Florida toll roads and receive just one toll bill.

This is also good news for Florida drivers who previously managed both an E-ZPass account and a Florida-based E-PASS or SunPass account. E-PASS now offers a single toll transponder, Uni, that works in all 18 states with just one toll account to manage. Plus, Uni is the only toll pass that offers volume toll discounts on all CFX expressways throughout Central Florida. Uni is accepted on all toll roads and bridges with signage that lists E-PASS, E-ZPass, E-ZPass Only, SunPass, SunPass Only or SunPass Express Lanes. Tell your friends and family who travel regularly in Florida to Go With Uni! You can also order on Amazon here.

Drivers are reminded that having more than one pass, such as an E-PASS and E-ZPass, in the car at the same time could now result in being double-charged for tolls.
CFX urges all drivers to remember construction crews are hard at work preparing CFX roads for your future travel needs. Please stay alert to prevent crashes, fatalities and injuries — keeping both workers and drivers safe. Here's how to drive smart when you enter a work zone:
1. Take turns merging. When two travel lanes are merging into one and traffic slows to a crawl, use the zipper merge to keep everyone moving. Learn how.

2. Slow and steady. Often, speed limits reduce close to a work zone. Paying attention to the posted limit and easing off the gas can help you stay in control.

3. Keep an eye out. When roadway workers are present — and especially when they are close to traffic — keeping tabs on their whereabouts can keep you alert and decrease any chances of injury. Expect the unexpected in work zones.

4. Slide to the left (or right). When emergency, law enforcement, or utility vehicles are stopped on the road, you must slow down or move one lane over when possible, under Florida’s Move Over law. Avoid a ticket and an injury — it’s a two-for-one!
Intermittent Nighttime Closures Scheduled at I-4 & SR 408 Interchange in June

Intermittent nighttime lane closures may be necessary at the I-4 and SR 408 interchange through June for minor work, such as installing signs and painting, as construction wraps up on I-4 Ultimate’s work on SR 408 through downtown Orlando. Motorists are urged to use caution in the construction area for their safety and that of the work crews. Click here for more details.
