The All Saints Messenger
October 25, 2020
On Sunday, October 25, we will kick off our Stewardship Campaign that helps to create the 2021 budget. This year our Stewardship theme “Faith Filled Generosity” is an opportunity for us to recommit our time, talent, and treasure to the mission of All Saints’ community. It is also an opportunity to reflect on how generosity is inspired by our faith; how we are formed and led into relationship with each other as we share our God-given gifts with the world.

Although we may not be meeting in person, your faithful, commitment to doing God’s work in the world has not ceased. You have always been a generous people giving your money, time and energy to sustain the ministries and programs of the church.

This is a time of anxiety and uncertainty for many of us, however, we pray as faith filled generous people that you remain good stewards by keeping up your pledge payments. You currently have the option of

Mailing your check to the church office
Including us on automated Bill Pay through your bank
Using the One-Time Gift button on our website

In the coming days, you will receive your commitment card for 2021

Keep in mind that stewardship is not only about money. Stewardship is a way of being, and a way of loving God, ourselves and our neighbors.

You are encouraged to reflect upon what is important in your daily lives. What is God’s will for you for 2021? What is God calling you to “be and do” in 2021? Where is God leading All Saints in 2021? Where do you place God and this community of All Saints in your priorities?

ANGEL TREE 2020

TIME IS RUNNING OUT! OCTOBER 31st IS THE DEADLINE TO GET YOUR CHECKS INTO ALL SAINTS.
A beloved parishioner, Mary Neil, was a volunteer for a United Way Agency, SOCKS (Serving Our Community with Kindness in Springwood). Springwood is an area between Belmont and Spencer Mountain and has a high number of families below or barely above the poverty line. Mary brought the idea of an Angel Tree to All Saints, to provide Christmas presents and food for needy families in that area of the County. Each year, the names of children, their ages and what they need/would like for Christmas are written on paper angels and placed on a Christmas Tree in the Family Life Center. Parishioners take an angel, buy presents, wrap them, and put them under the tree for transportation to SOCKS for disbursement to their families. Unfortunately, Miss Mary is no longer with us but the Angel Tree continues on. Linda Klocker oversees the Angel Tree at All Saints.

Due to Covid-19 we are having to change how we honor our commitments and continue to do ministry. With that being said we offer the following suggestions for the Angel Tree Ministry this year.
  • We will ask for financial donations instead of bringing gifts into the church. Donations will be solicited during the month of October. Please make your donation in the form of a check made out to All Saints and put Angel Tree in the memo line.
  • Although that seems like an early date, donations must be counted, number of children which can be purchased for identified as well as purchasing etc. during the month of November for Dec 1 delivery.
  • The ministry representative ( Linda Klocker) will communicate with the parish through the Messenger and during announcements concerning the needs for money donations,
  • The ministry representative will work with the business office about how much money was raised and turning in receipts for reimbursement.
  • The ministry representative will communicate with SOCKs to find out the needs of the people
  • Linda Klocker and a small team of volunteers from her family will purchase, wrap and deliver the gifts.
  • Reports will be given to the Vestry as well as the parish.

We realize that this is a difficult time for all of us. More families then ever will be looking at ways to make a Merry and Blessed Christmas for their families. Please help us show our love for our neighbors, so needed at this time, by helping out with this ministry. Please note that no donation is too small, every dollar will go to help a family with gifts and food this Christmas.

Any questions can be addressed to Linda Klocker, leklocker@gmail.com or at 704-827-3901. Thanks again and God bless.

A Copy of the Report from All Saints for the 98th Annual Convention of The Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina to be held on
November 12-14, 2020

October 22, 2020

The Very Rev. Shawn Griffith, Rector
Dean of the Piedmont Deanery
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church
258 West Franklin Blvd
Gastonia, NC 28052

RE: Report for Convention

Dear Friends,

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2
All Saints Gastonia is immensely proud of how we have adapted in the Covid-19 pandemic and have maintained worship and vital ministries. We have not missed a church service this year as we immediately started Zoom services when in-person worship was not possible. In the Zoom services, we have shared an interactive experience with many different readers and music. We also enjoy fellowship in a virtual coffee hour. We continue readiness planning for a return to in-person services. This has kick started the development of future capabilities to offer more variety in services going forward, including live streaming.
All Saints Gastonia has also continued to serve our parishioners and the community through outreach programs, in some cases adapting to deliver them in new ways. We continue to provide meals through Salvation Army and the Weekend BackPack Food Program. We have also found new ways to provide financial and other support for ministries such as Crisis Assistance Ministries, providing school supplies to a local elementary school and our local Angel Tree program. In fact, we have had our most successful financial support for these programs from our parishioners in years, in part because of their generosity but also because we tried new things.
While our facilities have not been open for worship and meetings, we have been very active in using this time to maintain and improve our buildings and grounds. We have successfully replaced four HVAC units in our Sanctuary and Education Building, replaced a hot water heater and done extensive improvements and maintenance on landscaping and facilities.
We appreciate the leadership of The Rev. Dr. Alicia Alexis, our Interim Rector and the work of our Vestry, staff and volunteers through these difficult times. Throughout it all, our Discernment Committee has continued the process towards calling our permanent rector and we believe that the experiences of the last year have prepared us for that transition.
We are deeply grateful to God for his gifts and graces which has given us strength for the journey. We are grateful to Bishop José, Canon Augusta, Fr. Shawn, Piedmont Dean of our Deanery, the Diocesan staff, and all of you near and far for your faithful support and service. More importantly, we are grateful that despite the challenges we face, we are able to continue to proclaim God’s word with our hands and feet to make a difference in our world.

Yours in Christ,
The Rev Dr. Alicia Alexis
Phillip Wertz, Senior Warden

Transition Prayer
O God, during this time of transition at All Saints, we pray for our parish family, that we may be prayerful in our self-reflection, open to growth during our transition, patient in our discernment, loving as your Son Jesus Christ teaches us, and daring in our faith. We thank you for the gifts and experiences which have blessed us and brought us to this moment. Help us to view this period of change, not as a threat to what has been, but as an invitation to build on the foundation which has been given to us. May we, being guided by the Holy Spirit, be united to accomplish our calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The Collect
Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Old Testament
Deuteronomy 34:1-12
Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the Plain—that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—as far as Zoar. The Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.” Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended.
Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

The Response
Psalm 90:1-6, 13-17
Domine, refugium
1 Lord, you have been our refuge *
from one generation to another.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth,
or the land and the earth were born, *
from age to age you are God.
3 You turn us back to the dust and say, *
"Go back, O child of earth."
4 For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past *
and like a watch in the night.
5 You sweep us away like a dream; *
we fade away suddenly like the grass.
6 In the morning it is green and flourishes; *
in the evening it is dried up and withered.
13 Return, O Lord; how long will you tarry? *
be gracious to your servants.
14 Satisfy us by your loving-kindness in the morning; *
so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.
15 Make us glad by the measure of the days that you afflicted us *
and the years in which we suffered adversity.
16 Show your servants your works *
and your splendor to their children.
17 May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; *
prosper the work of our hands;
prosper our handiwork.

The Epistle
1 Thessalonians 2:1-8
You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.

The Gospel
Matthew 22:34-46
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?
If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
