 Today's Meeting Overview!
keeping with guidelines to protect our communities, SITS will be meeting on Zoom until further notice.
Regardless, life goes on and we
SITS-ters carry on!
To join any meeting, email us at [email protected] and request the link!

Hello!! President Janna led us all in another Meeting on Zoom ( or 'Zooming' as I like to call it!). We saw 25 of our lovely club members' smiling faces...as well as Janna's guest, Meryl... lovely Zoo-meet you ... ( see what I did there.. to meet you.. Zoo-meet you... ;)
Invocation - Lydia reminded us that, despite the global situation at the moment, it is even more important than ever before to take care of each other in these ever increasingly difficult times... thank you Lydia

This week's 'Zooming' (remember.. meeting crossed with Zoom... keep up..) was dedicated to committee chairs making a short presentation about all that their committee does and is hoping to do in this coming new Soroptimist year. That's right our New Year has just started.. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Now, please bear in mind that, some of our committee activities may be furloughed/adapted/postponed or generally turned upside-down. However, one thing you can be sure of in these unprecedented times (I've heard that word a lot lately but sorry it just fits) is that our SITSters will make the best of whatever they are faced with!

Committees - We have a number of committees in our club that perform a variety of services, to our club internally as well as providing services to our community. Each member is encouraged to join at least one technical and one service committee. Members are encouraged to try a few out and also to help out ad hoc when they are busy.
Technical Committees:
These are the committees that ensure the smooth running of the club on a day to day basis:
Breakfast - We are all taking care of our own breakfasts currently on Thursday mornings ... we haven't yet figured out to have our amazing breakfast crew be in 25 kitchens all at once.. but when we are back to our normal meeting venue we look forward to the amazing job they do of getting everything ready for us!
Presentations - Hellen, we thank you for taking on this most important role of arranging all our fascinating speakers that join us to...umm well.. speak to us. She is already on a role with July and August pretty much booked out but if you know of anyone wanting to tell us all about what they do for our community then send us an email at [email protected]
Retention and Recruitment - Wendy David is our recruitment guru so, once she has you in her sights to join our club... look out!!
Cultural and Social - This is the committee that makes sure we have fun. Currently our predicted fun will be mostly of the outdoor/social distancing variety.. but we are talented ladies and can walk AND talk at the same time.
Attendance - These lovely ladies make sure we are all present and correct and generally keep us all in line. I'm sure they find it much easier to count us all in our Zoom tiles (a la Brady Bunch) than chasing us around a room like herding cats...Thank you ladies!
Financial - a crucial part of how well our club runs. Our treasurers work so hard to make sure that we account for our funds correctly and efficiently. They even make sure we spend it... which apparently is harder than it sounds.. go figure! (little accountancy pun there ..)
We wouldn't be able to survive without them! ALL COMMITTEE BUDGETS NEED TO BE WITH JEAN BY JULY 31ST!!
So below is an overview of what each committee strives to do each year. It is not an exhaustive list as that would take FAR too long - for all the details click here to go to our website (thank you Lisa, our Communications Chair)
Service Committees:
Economic and Social Development: This committee generally help people lift themselves up. Family Resource Center, Choices for Children and Juvenile Service Council among others.
Educational committee: Very active committee.
Lake Tahoe Education Foundation. BATS (Bringing Arts To Schools). Backpacks for children in need before school starts.
Their signature and biggest project: Free books for all kids in Kindergarten to eighth grade to take home at the end of the school year. That's about 3,500 books!! Boys and Girls Club and Live Violence Free also benefit.
Youth Enrichment and Scholarship (YES) - During the year work with Mount Tallac with a monthly student award as well as scholarships and funds throughout the year. Yearly scholarships that go to local High Schools and Middle Schools for achievement and recognition. This committee truly supports the youth in our community.
Healthy Women Healthy World - Promoting physical, mental and emotional health. This year will feature as much as they can with the great outdoors. Encouraging us all to be healthy ourselves. (Again where the walking AND talking comes in) This committee supports organisations that support the health of the world in general.
One Voice: Support organisation locally and internationally. Zawadisha, Kellerman, St Joseph Land Trust, Awaken. Disaster relief as and when needed. Grants to Tahoe Magic and scholarships to a Kenyan school have featured on their docket this past year.
Project Middle School (PMS) - One of our signature projects. Hands on meetings with Junior S Club in the past have helped support these young women in their own volunteer endeavors. STEM projects are also focused on as well as financial support for Girls Empowerment projects.
Awards: GIVE (Girls into Volunteer Experiences) Award. Celebrating young women who are venturing into the world of volunteering. 'Live Your Dream' award empowering young women to reach their full potential.
Dream it Be It: A committee that works with the Soroptimist International signature project h elping girls to live and be their best. A hands on program taking girls through a program of self discovery and the benefits of support. Creative, fun and nurturing.
Elegant Evening: A very big part of our focus as this, in the past, has been our one annual fundraiser. With everything changing we are looking to make the best of everything as usual.. so watch this space!

Annual Retreat - August 5th at 5.30 - 7.30pm - Zoom details to come!

All of our committees will be having to work 'around' some of their usual programs/meetings due to COVID 19 but we will prevail!!

General Announcements: We have some members who we haven't seen on our weekly zoom meetings. Miyera has extended an offer in case your reluctance is the technology. She has an amazing IT guy and Karen J can attest to how wonderful he is. Get a hold of Miyera or call Lisa or Mandy. Thank you to Julie who will CHAIR the Project Middle School Committee. We appreciate you stepping up.  We will know more shortly of the plans the schools are laying out for the next school year.  We'll keep you posted.

trouble knocked at the door but hearing laughter walked away

Please continue to be smart and safe for the health and economy of our community.

LTCC Taste of Gold has gone virtual! LTCC
students need your financial support now more than ever. Due to COVID-19 safety concerns, Taste of Gold has gone virtual this year - including an online silent auction! Auction proceeds fund the campus Equity Food Pantry, emergency book fund, and the Lake Tahoe College Promise for local high school students entering LTCC in the fall.
The silent auction ends July 18, 2020 at 6 pm. Winners will be announced by Monday, July 20, 2020. All sales are final.

STHS Youth need a few volunteers! Here's information from our friend, Amy Jackson of Mt. Tallac/STHS.
I wanted to bring forth a COMMUNITY need that you may or may not be interested in assisting with due to COVID restrictions.  As we enter summer Amanda Hammond, our community liaison for our most at risk families, is not working.  During COVID she has collected 16 families that she brings food to every Friday.  We are looking for volunteers to collect  and bag the food each Friday morning at Bread and Broth (located  at St Teresa's Church ) and deliver to porches of identified families.
It seems that two person teams would be best (one driver and one to drop the bags) but we  realize many people are currently not comfortable carpooling with anyone outside of their residence.    We were thinking each volunteer might handle four families and Amanda would try and group them by addresses to eliminate driving all over town.  Thank you for announcing at your meeting this week!  Amanda is included in this thread and by replying ALL we can determine if there is any interest.  This is not a Tallac request but a need we anticipate in the community once Amanda closes up for the summer.
Thanks so much for  considering this request and for ALLLLLLL of your support this year!

LTCC continues with fun ZOOM classes.. and they even have spin bikes you can rent to use at home!! See the LTCC site for details - Here is a schedule for the ZOOM online exercise classes

Air Ambulance information: While we are very familiar with CalStar/AirMed, we might not know that REMSA Careflight is a separate but essential entity as well! CalStar, as it is now "for profit" does not have reciprication with REMSA which is "not for profit". If you live in our area and need to call 911 it's anybody's guess which agency will be able to respond.  For a nominal subscription (members, tell them you are with SITS) you can have coverage with REMSA as well.  Call REMSA at 775-858-5745. To be fully covered, you may want to consider subscribing to all three elements: CalStar, Fly You Home, and REMSA. Several of us were lucky to have subscriptions when they were needed. No money due after the emergency. Please share this information with family and friends. Subscriptions make a great gift!

Properly getting rid of your medicines:  Expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs should NOT be thrown in the normal trash nor flushed down the toilet (as they may contaminate the water supply). There's a drop-off kiosk on the bottom floor of the county building at Stateline (same building as the DMV, court, Sheriff, etc).

A recent  scare by one of our members points up the importance  of keeping your shingles vaccine up to date. Even if you have had a vaccination, you need to get the new formulation.  The CDC recommends that healthy adults ages 50 and older get the shingles vaccine , Shingrix, which provides greater protection than Zostavax. The vaccine  is given in two doses, 2 to 6 months apart.  You can find out more information here.

This is also the time of year to arrange to get your flu shot.  Every local pharmacy offers flu shots, or you can make an appointment with your primary care provider.  People over 65 are especially vulnerable to flu complications and should request the high dose flu shot for seniors.

Need some help with stress, anxiety, phobias, emotional disorders, chronic pain, addiction, weight control, and limiting beliefs...?
Tapping can help....
What is Tapping?
Tapping, also known as EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), is a powerful holistic healing technique that has been proven to effectively resolve a range of issues...
Tapping therapy is based on the combined principles of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. Tapping with the fingertips on specific meridian endpoints of the body, while focusing on negative emotions or physical sensations, helps to calm the nervous system, rewire the brain to respond in healthier ways, and restore the body's balance of energy.. find out more at  Tapping 101
