Mayoral & Aldermanic Candidate Forums / Spook Who Sat by the Door

View as Webpage January 30 2023
Greetings!

Please see below scheduled candidate forums.

COAL encourages its membership, partners and greater community-of-interest, to attend candidate forums, read independent analysis, assess the performance of incumbents, analyze the platforms of those aspiring to hold office, talk with friends and engage in meaningful discussion - all towards casting informed votes for Mayor, Clerk, Treasurer, Alderperson, and Police District Council Member.

If an officeholder is running unopposed, we must still question, challenge and make demands of them for the next term, soliciting commitments that can be used to assess their performance over the next four years.

Voting is our voice.

Please see other election-related information. Additionally, of note there is a faith-leaders townhall to discuss policing and violence prevention on January 31st, and an interesting event to honor the 50th Anniversary of The Spook Who Sat By The Door film scheduled for February 4th.

Finally, as you've come to expect, you'll be able to meet a number of candidates at COAL's February Breakfast, focused on Empowering Communities for Public Safety and the to-be-elected for the first-time Police District Council positions.

Respectfully,

COAL Board of Directors

How can I register to vote?
First, you can check your registration status on the city’s website.

To register for the first time or update your registration, you have several options — you can go online and register, you can download an application and mail it in or you can call (312) 269-7851 and request an application be mailed to you.
You can also register the same day you vote in person, as long as you bring the right documentation.
This Saturday, our member Kwabena Rasuli is hosting an event to honor the 50th Anniversary of The Spook Who Sat By The Door film.

The event features a discussion with our member and Black Panther Party member Davíd Lemieux. Davíd played a major role in the film.

Did you know that director Ivan Dixon and the rest of the production filmed a great portion of the movie in Gary, IN because of the pushback in Chicago?

Also, Sam Greenlee, the prolific author of the book, taught a class with our member Jamal Craft and also wrote for my Metropolis newspaper. If you’re free on Saturday, come on out!

What We Believe
The Coalition of African American Leaders believes that it is important to examine the critical issues confronting the African American community where injustice, inequality and the absence of access and opportunity continue to prevail, thereby negatively impacting us as a people.

COAL is an assemblage that advocates and organizes for appropriate and responsible public policy change, system behavior change and equality of opportunity. We aim to achieve for all of our people the fullness of the life experience without any form of racism or exclusion as a deterrent.

We believe we must prepare ourselves for the opportunity of this full participation, thereby achieving the necessary education and training to participate.
