CBRL news March 2020
Welcome to our March newsletter.

We hope that you and your loved ones are safe during this uncertain time. Earlier this month we were forced to close the doors at both our institutes, in Amman and East Jerusalem, after our host country's governments sought to tackle this pandemic. Our team continue to work remotely and we hope that it will not be too long before we are able to welcome you back to our institutes and see you at one of our events.

To keep you engaged with research from the Levant during this time, we have a huge archive of free online resources including podcasts, research blog posts written by CBRL grant recipients over the past couple of years and our annual Bulletins available as open-access here. From tomorrow, a number of articles from our journal Contemporary Levant on themes related to the potential impact of COVID-19 in the region will be available as open-access until September 2020. The latest issue of Levant will also be available as open access until September.

In other news, it's that time of year when we announce the open call for our annual 2020 prize for best paper submitted to one of our peer-reviewed journals, Contemporary Levant. You can find out more details and how to apply below.

And finally, we'd like say huge congratulations to CBRL Trustee Gerasimos Tsourapas who has received the 2020 ENMISA Distinguished Book Award by the International Studies Association.  The award recognises the best book published over the past two years in the study of the international politics of ethnicity, nationalism or migration. Gerasimos’ book, The Politics of Migration in Modern Egypt - Strategies for Regime Survival in Autocracies (Cambridge University Press, 2019), identifies the importance of labour migration for the durability of authoritarian regimes across the Middle East and the broader Global South. You can read a recent blog post from Gerasimos that looks at another aspect of his research - on Syrian refugees in Jordan and the rise of refugee rentierism - here .

We hope you enjoy reading our March news and send warm greetings to you all.
