Fun Fact - OLLA!

The word OLLA is a word that sounds different depending on where you are in the Spanish-speaking world. The double L is most commonly explained as making a Y sound. So, the word for kettle in Spanish would be "o - ya"...Unless you're in Buenos Aires, Argentina where the LL sounds like the end of the word MIRAGE..."o - zha". Or, if you are in northern Argentina close to Brazil, the LL sounds like the middle of MILLION or SCALLION...
"o - lya". But NEVER say "o - la" because you'll just get a smile and a HI back...no kettle full of delicious soup!

Prayers & Praise
* PRAY for safe travels and no obstacles during our travels during September and early October.

* THANK GOD for the 3 new babies on the mission field here in Chile...Axel, born to GLO missionary Aaron & Yenifer Farrow; Samantha, born to Pastor Obed & Ana Coronado serving in Valparaiso; Hannah, born to Vicar Pablo & Camila Gonzalez.

* REMEMBER the national Lutheran church of Chile as it goes through challenges and changes. Pray for more Pastors/missionaries to serve in this country.

* PRAY FOR GOD'S PRESENCE in the marriage of our niece, Monique, to her fianceƩ, Silas in September.

* PRAISE GOD for mission work continuing across the globe despite Covid-19, and to bless the GLO App.

* PRAY FOR THE EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS both in the United States and Chile...pray for patience and understanding as they continue to teach and learn.

*  WE PRAISE GOD for the 3  people ready to be confirmed at the mission:  Luis, Juan Carlos, Veronica Pray that God will use them mightily in His kingdom.

* PRAY for our small mission, Divina Providencia- that God will provide for the rental of the ministry property and show us over and over again how He knows the plans He has for the future!

"...on this rock I will build my church..." (Mt. 16:18)
Those words were spoken by Jesus just after Peter made his famous confession of faith: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Those verses seemed more meaningful to me when I read them last Sunday, especially this part: "I will build My church". What a comfort it is to know that Jesus is the owner of the Church, and that He is the one who builds it! Especially in these uncertain times, when churches everywhere are struggling to find a new normal and figure out how to be the Church in a mixed-up, coronavirus world. Jesus owns the Church. He owns your church, He owns my church, He owns the Church in Chile. Jesus is at work building the church in Santiago. All praise to the Owner of the Church!
Being the Church in Action!
JOIN US IN PRAISING GOD for completion of several projects despite the challenges of Covid-19 restrictions! The apartment over the garage at the back of the mission property is complete. It is a cute studio apartment with an open living space and a good-sized laundry/bathroom combo.

AFTER: Corali and Domenico moving in to the new apartment
The apartment, BEFORE.

Domenico and Corali Loturco are renting this space while serving as the new coordinators of the Immigrant Ministry! What does that mean? They are the on-site administrators, maintenance people and problem-solvers at "Amapolas". (We frequently call the mission site "Amapolas" because that's the name of the street address.) Continue reading to find out more:

FOOD  BANK...We continue using donations of money and food items to put together "food baskets". Many people contact us weekly and schedule a time to come and pick up a bag of groceries. Over 50 families have benefited from this project so far!

CLOTHING BANK... People also have access to our "Resale Shop" where we have clothing and household items for purchase at very low prices. As quarantine is lowered, we hope to open to the public.

OLLA COMUNITARIA
Although this name literally means, "Community Soup Pot", the concept is more like a Soup Kitchen. Through donations, we purchase ingredients to make a delicious hot meal. Domenico directs the volunteers at church in the cooking, and then we take our kettles and distribute hot food to people downtown. The first week we fed 75 people- mostly Venezuelan immigrants! The second week we fed 95. Now we're preparing for 100!

HOUSE OF REFUGE
We continue to welcome more people into the house we have at Amapolas. We have room for about 3 more immigrants. This community is a place to find security, support and hope as we share God's Word as well as His love. In the next few months we expect 4 of these people to be ready to move out on their own, and then the process will begin again as we have space for others.

Coronavirus update - Chile
CORONA VIRUS UPDATE...According to the Worldometers site, Chile ranks #9 in the corona virus pandemic. Since Chile is a relatively small country with a much lower population than the USA, the ratio of cases per 1 million people is high at 20,249!  However, there are not as many "serious" cases as in many other countries. Currently, the numbers have been dropping and therefore, the government has slowly begun to lower restrictions. In Santiago, each municipality is evaluated and given "permission" to enter into the corresponding 5 step process that the government has laid out for a slow return to normality. Lord willing, we will be able to start having worship services on location in October.

Travel Plans - YES!
We have been given the green light to travel to the United States!  Because things are "not quite" back to normal in the US, we decided to adjust our plans and will NOT be visiting congregations.  Rather than our scheduled furlough, this will be a shorter "vacation trip" - mainly to see family. We plan to reschedule our 3-month furlough for 2021. We are thankful that our "substitutes", Rev. Paul and Barb Brink, have agreed to adjust their plans as well, and they look forward to coming to Chile sometime next year to fill in for us when we go on furlough.
So, that means LOTS of work during August to get things lined up during our absence. Pray that we can record in advance several worship services that will be aired on-line while we're gone, and pray for the church members who will step up as leaders and will oversee activities at the mission.

We praise God for each of you, our "mission partners". In addition to providing our living expenses, your financial contributions have also been supporting many other people in Santiago who are struggling during the COVID-19 crisis! We praise God for blessing us through you!
