Thoughts with Mr. Watts
“Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.” - Pope Saint John Paul II
Hello St. Catharine Families:

It is hard to believe tomorrow is the first day of school. The faculty, staff, and I are extremely grateful for the start of a new year.

We know there are challenges ahead. We also know that we, as a school community, have been through many challenges over the past year.

"If God is for us, who can be against us?" - Romans 8:31

Please pray for all of the student and staff that we have a safe, healthy, and joyous school year.

Please pray this Generosity Prayer that was shared with me by one of our amazing school parents.

Lord Jesus, teach me to be generous;
teach me to serve you as you deserve,
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labor and not to seek reward,
except that of knowing that I do your will.

Amen.

Arrival
All students will report to the gym on the first day of school using the back entrance. This will be the same for all "first days of the week" this school year.

Students will be greeted and encouraged to join their class in the gym. After announcements and prayer, students will be dismissed by class to their rooms.

All other days, including Thursday and Friday of this week, students will report directly to their classrooms using assigned doors in the back of the school.

Students should arrive at school no earlier than 7:45 and no later than 8:05.

Recess/ Lunch
We will be continuing the USDA Free Lunch Program this year. Students will be eating in the cafeteria with assigned seating and distancing. Additional seating will be utilized to encourage this.

Dismissal
All students will be dismissed from their classrooms starting at 2:55PM. Walkers will exit out the front door and be dismissed in order from 8th grade to Kindergarten.

Car Riders will be dismissed when their pick-up number appears. Returning families will keep their same number, new families will be assigned pick-up numbers and shared via a Google Sheet

Laminated pick-up numbers will be sent home and used until new car tags arrive.

FACTS Student Information System
Be on the lookout for a separate email for instructions on accessing the Family Portal for FACTS Student Information System. FACTS will be replacing Digital Academy (which replaced School Speak) as our new system for attendance, communication, grading, and all other information.

Protecting God's Children Certification
We will be hosting a Protecting God's Children Certification at St. Catharine School in conjunction with FBI/BCI Fingerprinting on Tuesday, August 31st at 6:00 PM.

All parent volunteers, coaches, and staff members must have their Protecting God's Children Certification within 60 days of their start date.

Curriculum Night
This year, we will be hosting our curriculum night scheduled by grade-bands on consecutive nights. We will start in the Parish Hall as a large group and finish by grades in each individual classroom.

  • Tuesday, August 31st
  • Kindergarten, First, and Second Grades
  • Wednesday, September 1st
  • Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades
  • Thursday, September 2nd
  • Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grades

September Seminar Series
Save the Dates! We will be hosting a series of presentations and discussions this Fall to help parents navigate some key aspects of their child's education and how to better collaborate to ensure student success.

  • Tuesday, September 7th
  • Standards-Based Grading:
  • Why not As, Bs, and Cs?
  • Tuesday, September 21st

  • How is My Child's Learning Supported?
  • Tuesday, September 28th
  • Social-Emotional Learning:
  • Improving Beyond Report Cards

May God Bless all of you and your families during this time.

Yours in Christ,

Mark Watts

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. – Isaiah 43:2
There are a few items to note that have changed from last year.

  • School day: 8:05 am - 2:55 pm Doors open at 7:45 am

  • Athletic Shoes can be white, black, and/or gray. They can be 1, 2, or all 3 colors.

  • Students will have Physical Education twice a week.

  • Shorts can be worn at the discretion of the parents. Just a reminder, students will be going outdoors for recess even in cold temperatures. Please make sure they have dressed appropriately for the weather.

  • We will be participating in the USDA Free lunch program for the 2021-22 School Year.

  • Masks will be required in the building for all students, staff, and visitors during school hours. They will not be required when outside.
We are looking for volunteers (especially the first week of school) to help serve lunch and monitor recess. It is a wonderful way to get an extra hug from your student.
UPDATE

We are aware that the school supply kits did not come with filler paper. Star-Beacon will deliver the filler paper to the school, as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience with this matter .
Summary of Updated Protocols for Franklin County Catholic Elementary Schools:
  • Masks will be temporarily required for all students, staff, and visitors while inside buildings during the school day. This requirement will be evaluated weekly based on several factors that could transition to masks being "strongly recommended" indoors.
  • Masks will not be required outside
  • Students and Staff wearing masks will not be required to quarantine if asymptomatic and exposure happens in a classroom setting.

The question is not, "How Smart are You?"
The question is, "How are You Smart?"

This year, we are incorporating a 30-minute period called their WIN period. This period is designed to provide an opportunity to address specific individual needs and support for each student.

W.I.N. = What I Need

This year every grade will have their own W.I.N. period, four days per week. During this time, students who need academic support will be able to receive those services without missing valuable class times. In addition, the W.I.N. period will be an excellent time for teachers to incorporate advanced curriculum, Project-Based Learning, and a variety of enrichment activities.
Physical Education for the 2021-2022 School Year

Students will be required to wear their gym uniform on days when physical education class is scheduled. Mr. Oddi will be taking students outside anytime weather permits. Masks will not be required when gym class is held outdoors.

A Message from Dr. Williams...

As Music Director of St. Catharine School, I am excited to announce two performing opportunities for students this year!

First, we will have a Jazz Ensemble for grades 4-8 that rehearses on Thursdays from 1:40 pm-2:25 pm (except for the 3rd Thursday of each month - which is an all-school Adoration). No audition required, just a commitment to the ensemble until our Christmas program in December. Owning or renting an instrument is strongly encouraged. We are looking for trumpet, saxophone, trombone, guitar, bass, drums, and piano players. Beginners are encouraged… I can teach you how to play!!

Second, we will have a choir for grades 4-8 that rehearses on Thursdays from 12:45 pm-1:30 pm (except for the 3rd Thursday of each month - which is an all-school Adoration). No audition required, just a commitment to the ensemble until our Christmas program in December.

A sign-up sheet will be on my door, and rehearsals begin Thursday, September 9, 2021.

Questions? Email Dr. Williams:
Faith Formation and making Disciples of Christ is why this school exists. We celebrate our Catholic Faith and the teachings of the church ion many ways. Our students have Religion Class daily. However, there are other ways we celebrate our faith as a school.

All-School Masses
We will have All-School Masses every Wednesday at 9:00 AM starting in September. Students will be participant as Lectors, Cantors, Choir, and eventually, Altar Servers and Gift Bearers.

For the time being, and because of limited seating, School Masses will be for students and staff only. Thank you for your understanding.

Altar Server Training
Deacon Reis will be conducting training sessions for altar servers later next month. Any 5th through 8th grade boy or girl interested in continuing or becoming an altar server is encouraged to do so. More information will be forthcoming.

All-School Adoration
Most of our grades will be participating in Eucharistic Adoration, Praise, and Worship in the afternoon on the 3rd Thursday of most months. We are blessed to have more opportunities for our students to be in the real presence of Jesus.

All School Rosary
We have scheduled two separate days for our school to pray to our Blessed Mother at the Grotto in October and May. This is a wonderful opportunity to honor the Queen of Heaven. One day will be on the Feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary and one during our May Crowning.

Sacramental Preparation
This year our 2nd grade will be receiving the sacraments or First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion while our 8th graders will be receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. We do not have dates for these solidified but will communicate with those families when we know.
