Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

When the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,

‘This people honors me
with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching human precepts
as doctrines.’
You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.” For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

A MESSAGE FROM TINA

Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
(Where kindness and love are, God is there.)

Gideon’s garden was so bursting with life last Friday that it was hard to take it in at first. Tomatoes, egg plant, squash, kale and tomatoes were all ripe for the picking and their bright colors made the field look ready for an Easter egg hunt. Pennie, Fisher and Matt had been working all morning to get things ready for the visit from a large group of kids from Multicultural Bridge’s Happiness Toolbox summer camp. Annalise joined in as well, of course, directing and helping and welcoming visitors large and small, beaming love to everyone, despite her broken foot. By 1:30, the garden was full of kids visiting with the chickens, meeting the animals across the road at Taft, and harvesting the bountiful crops which some had come earlier in the year to help plant.

“How many tomatoes do you think you have in there?” I asked a six-year-old girl named Roe who had found a friend (Kathy’s grand-daughter, Vivi) to help her lug a bright yellow tub of cherry tomatoes down the row. ‘Ummmm,” she replied, thoughtful for a moment, figuring it out. “One-thousand-seven-sixty-hundred!!” she finally guessed. Vivi beamed them, proud as can be. “Yup,” she said. “Team work makes for dream work!” and then they were off again, down the row together to another vine rich with ripe, red fruit.

The day finished with an ice cream extravaganza under the tent (at least 10 flavors to choose from, all donated by the Big Y, and more toppings than I could count), and then with a dance performance, choreographed by one of the Happiness Toolbox counselors, and finally with the distribution of bags bulging with freshly picked produce for everyone to take home.

It was an extraordinary day, full of love and friendship and the kind of abundant generosity that speaks of God’s love for us all. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for your continual presence with us – and thank you Pennie, Annalise, Fisher, Matt, Dutch, Kathy and everyone who helped make the day such a miracle for us all.

Applications Open for Loving the Questions

God has planted within each of our hearts a way of being and seeing the world that only we can bring. When we offer the fullness of who we are, we give this world an irreplaceable and priceless gift: our very selves. How do I offer the fullness of who I am? How do I live my best life? What form does this take? These are the questions, we seek to wrestle out in Loving the Questions

Loving the Questions is a discernment space that honors the Spirit’s call to both lay and ordained individuals, and aims to enable you to:
• Know and understand your unique giftedness
• Understand what God is calling you to do
• Identify the tools you will need for your ministry; and
• Develop a plan of formation for ministry

Loving the Questions will be held online via Zoom from 6:30-9:00 pm.
Sept 17-18th Opening Retreat (Friday-Saturday overnight.

Applications due no later than September 1, 2021.
Click Here for more information and for the program application.
Program Fee: $250
We encourage participants to split the cost of the program with their parish.

If you have questions, please contact: The Rev. Jennifer Gregg [email protected] or Craig Hammond [email protected]

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.
I WANT TO HELP
GIDEON'S GARDEN
MULTICULTURAL BRIDGE AT GIDEON'S GARDEN
This Friday we had an amazing group of young people and counselors come to the garden. About 25 different campers were accompanied by counselors with Gwendolyn VanSant for the final day of the Happiness Toolbox Summer Camp run by Multicultural Bridge. The final day of camp includes activities at Gideon's Garden and Taft Farms and the annual ice cream social at the garden. At the end we made a circle and each shared our favorite part of the day.

The kids harvested tomatoes, beans, kale and peppers. Each family received a bag of mixed vegetables from the garden to take home! The bags contained corn from Taft Farms, cauliflower, kale, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant and squash.

Thank you Fisher and Matt for leading the groups. Thank you Pennie for bringing the whole day together, and Tina for being the shining support that kept everyone smiling. Matt's last day in the garden is Tuesday the 24th.

Fisher leads campers in how to wash and pack kale with Tina.

Campers wash kale with their counselor and Tina.
Matt, Fisher, Jim and Dutch pack bags for each camper to take home.

[Episcopal News Service] As the song known as the “Black national anthem” achieves wider recognition in the United States, its significance is also being celebrated in The Episcopal Church. “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” sung by generations of African Americans as a tribute to their struggles and triumphs, was introduced to white American Christians by Episcopalians and Lutherans 40 years ago, and a congressional bill endorsed by The Episcopal Church now proposes designating it as the U.S. national hymn.
