The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is pleased to announce the six winners of the 2021 Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest: three by medical students and three by nursing students. First place for medical students is awarded to Ross Perry of the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, and first place for nursing students is awarded to Hunter Marshall of the University of New Mexico College of Nursing.

Second place is awarded to Davina Ran of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and Anna Swartzlander of University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing, and third place goes to Fletcher Bell of Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Jessica Grey of University of Massachusetts, Amherst College of Nursing.

The winning essays, which featured themes such as bearing witness to an elder patient’s hard-earned truths and maintaining balance, will be published in two esteemed journals, Academic Medicine and Journal of Professional Nursing.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and The Arnold P. Gold Foundation are excited to announce that 50 schools of nursing have been selected to receive funding to host White Coat/Oath Ceremonies for incoming students in the 2021-2022 academic year. “The compassionate connection that nurses forge with their patients is the foundation of humanistic healthcare – care that all people deserve. We are delighted to join with AACN to support 50 schools of nursing in establishing this humanistic ritual and emphasizing the importance of the human connection in their future care,” said Dr. Richard I. Levin, President and CEO of the Gold Foundation.

Rosemarie Fisher joins the Gold Foundation Trustees
The Gold Foundation is delighted to announce that Rosemarie L. Fisher, MD, is chair-elect of the Gold Humanism Honor Society Advisory Board. In that role, she also joins the Gold Foundation Board of Trustees. Dr. Fisher is Professor Emerita, Senior Research Scientist and Deputy Title IX Coordinator at Yale School of Medicine and also Chair of the Governance Committee of the GHHS Advisory Council. She previously has served as the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Program Director for Internal Medicine at Yale. She has also served as a Board Member of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Fisher!
Congratulations to the 2021 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Awardees & the newest GHHS inductees
Please join us in celebrating the newest Tow awardees and GHHS inductees! More than 100 medical schools bestow the annual Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award on one faculty member and one graduating medical student each spring at graduation, recognizing them as role models of humanism. In addition, more than 170 Gold Humanism Honor Society chapters around the globe also induct their newest members around this time. Each year, the Gold Foundation hosts an event on Martha's Vineyard to bring together our long-time supporters with those new to our nonprofit organization. In 2021, our "Vineyard" event was virtual, yet still imbued with warmth and devotion to our shared mission. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha — 2021 Vilcek-Gold Award recipient, author of "What the Eyes Don't See," pediatrician, scientist, and activist — spoke about her passion for humanism in healthcare, her experiences, and the path ahead. Don’t miss 2021 Vilcek-Gold Award honorees at the AAMC Learn Serve Lead conference
 2021 Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare recipients Dr. Jirayut “New” Latthivongskorn and Dr. Denisse Rojas Marquez will lead a session at the 2021 AAMC Learn Serve Lead virtual conference on Tuesday, November 9, at 2:15 p.m. ET.

In this session, Drs. Rojas Marquez and Latthivongskorn will share their commitment to humanism, and discuss stories from their work in supporting immigrant students and patients. They will also be presented with the 2021 Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare by Jan T. Vilcek, MD, PhD, chairman and CEO of the Vilcek Foundation; David J. Skorton, MD, president and CEO of the AAMC; and Richard I. Levin, MD, president and CEO of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation. The award honors an immigrant professional who has made extraordinary contributions to humanism in healthcare.
