A three-part story by CNN on how lockdown drills affect U.S. children quoted Amanda Nickerson, director of the Alberti Center for Bullying Abuse Prevention. The story provided a comprehensive view of how drills are conducted, perceptions of students, and arguments for and against drills. It also highlighted the research that Nickerson has conducted, much of it in collaboration with Dr. Jaclyn Schildkraut, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice (SUNY Oswego) and national expert on mass shootings, on the impact of lockdown drills. The series emphasizes how conducting drills following best practices as advocated by the National Association of School Psychologists and the National Association of School Resource Officers, such as the I Love U Guys Foundation’s Standard Response Protocol, increase student preparedness without causing adverse reactions.

Research Collaboration with Lancaster Central School District

Stephanie Fredrick, associate director of the Alberti Center, partnered with Lancaster Central School District during the 2020-2021 school year to help with a district-wide assessment of school climate and student and teacher well-being. They worked together to administer surveys to obtain student, teacher, and parent perspectives on school climate, school engagement, stressors, and positive aspects of this challenging and unique year. Results from the surveys will help inform district and school-wide initiatives to continue to promote student and educator wellness and school community within Lancaster schools.
