Chair's Message:

It's Time to Celebrate the 2022 Season and Looking Forward to next Year:

It’s the time of the season to come together and celebrate the 2022 offshore racing events and acknowledge all participants. Please join us at this year’s awards banquet at PCYC on November 19, 2022, to share some stories, some laughs and to raise a glass to the entire fleet of participants in the LO300 and Susan Hood Trophy Race.   The details of the banquet have not yet been confirmed.  We will send them out soon.

Great news!  Andrew Lennox from driveHG has announced that they will be back as title sponsor for next year!  They are thrilled with our partnership (as are we)  and are looking forward to enhancing our racing experience next year.

Finally, we are getting ready to go back to the Toronto International Boat Show in January.  We miss seeing everyone in the winter and have our fingers crossed that all will proceed as normal.  We will be looking for volunteers to man the booth so please reach out to us if you are interested in meeting fellow racers, please do not hesitate to contact us.  If you are not that experienced in the race and still would like to help, we welcome you to volunteer.  We will assign you to a shift with an experienced person and promise you will meet some very interesting people.

The LOOR committee is already busy planning webinars and social gatherings for next year.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

The Access Abilities/North Sails - Sail Draw

And the Winner is……Ian McAllister

Access Abilities and North Sails teamed up this year to sponsor the Sail Draw. The winner received a Certificate for $5,000.00 off the purchase of new sail supplied by North Sails. Winner Ian McAllister is one of the people instrumental in keeping the LOOR races alive and well.  He was on the committees for the LO300, Susan Hood and LOSHRS races before many of us were racing.  He is well deserving of this prize and we are thrilled that he won.

Congratulations Ian!

LOSHrs Dalhousie Weekend Review:

The weekend of racing from Port Credit Yacht Club to Dalhousie Yacht Club on Saturday September 17, 2022, and back to PCYC the next day, marks the end of LOOR’s racing season for 2022. The racing part that is – the awards banquets are yet to come.

After a windy Friday evening, Saturday morning was calm with just enough wind to get everyone over the start line. An hour later the speed log and the anemometer both showed nothing but zeros while the sea state was very lumpy from the previous night’s wind. As a result for the next two hours racers watched as the sails slatted back and forth and boats drifted, and wondered if they would rather be golfing!  Not an auspicious beginning for the last weekend of racing, but the wind eventually filled in from the east, building for the rest of the crossing to DYC, resulting in dome fine sailing after all.

DYC welcomed racers with their usual exceptional hospitality and hosted a dock party (organized by LOOR Committee member Sandra Chave) with beverages supplied by Muskoka Brewery. Following that was a plated dinner provided by the club, and finally the ever popular sail draw - sponsored by North Sails and Access Abilities - for $5,000 towards a new sail. As mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter the winner was Ian McAllister (SV Mr. Ed).

After a long day on the water Saturday, Sunday presented racers with what can only be called a perfect day of sailing. The wind was from the west, with it coming from forward of the beam to start and gradually backing allowing those in the spinnaker classes to ‘pop the chute’ half way across.   The wind remained steady in the mid to upper-teens throughout the day, and while there was no necessity for any tactical choices to be made, or even a single tack for that matter, every boat enjoyed a fast crossing with clear skies overhead and most likely doing hull speed.
