The folks at Robert Craig Winery know a thing or two about farming extreme terrors. Located on Howell Mountain, they have always focused on exploring Napa Valley's mountain appellations and producing small batches of powerful Cabernet Sauvignons.  The late Mr. Craig's career began on Mount Veeder at The Hess Collection.  He purchased his first vineyard in 1993 on Mount George, a sub-appellation near Stags Leap District from where their flagship "Affinity" still hails.  In addition to their vineyards on Howell Mountain they bottle Cabernets from their vineyards on Spring Mountain, Mount Veeder and Diamond Mountain as well.

"Robert Craig Winery remains under the radar for high quality, impressive wines."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Oct 2013

"This winery has been consistently excellent throughout my tastings in Napa going back many, many years. They have also kept a lid on pricing, which remains realistic and consumer-friendly."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Dec 2016

Both wines we're offering today are from 2016 - one of the great modern vintages in Napa Valley (98 points Wine Spectator, 98 points Wine Advocate, 95 points Wine Enthusiast).  It was another drought year in Napa Valley but with no real heat spikes to speak of.  The wines are concentrated, balanced and ready to drink young or to lay down for many years.  Buy 2016s while you still can!

"Affinity" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
$124.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
**10 cases available**

"Affinity" is the winery's Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.  It is grown in the LaLonde Vineyard, nestled in Coombsville's Mt. George foothills on the eastern side of the Napa Valley.

Purchased in 1993, it has always provided fruit reflective of its volcanic, stoney terroir.  Cropped at only 2.8 tons per acre, these 30-year-old vines grow an intense, racy, black fruited Cabernet Sauvignon.  The 2016 has the power to cellar for decades, yet is supple enough to enjoy while young.

The 2016 is composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 7% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec.  It spent 18 months in French oak 225 litre barriques.  60% were new, 40% were second fill. It was bottled unfiltered and unfined.  3,800 cases were produced.

"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Affinity is a gorgeous entry-level offering. Ripe and plummy, with striking up-front fruit, the 2016 has a lot to offer, including tons of immediacy and sheer appeal. Super-ripe red cherry, raspberry jam, vanilla and sweet spice add to the wine's racy, inviting personality. The Affinity is now mostly (85%) estate grown fruit from a site in Coombsville."

"This subtly tarry blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, offers a nicely resolved array of blackcurrant aromas and flavours with fine and fresh tannins. Drink or hold."

Howell Mountain A.V.A.
Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
$188.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
**8 cases available**

The Howell Mountain Cabernet comes from the Estate Vineyard where the winery is located, and from Candlestick Ridge vineyard, formerly owned by Duckhorn Wine Company.

The variation in soils and microclimates within the Estate Vineyard make it the most challenging of all their vineyards to farm. The yields are on average a meager 1.8 tons to the acre, and the fruit possesses a rare power and expression of this site. Soils are especially shallow, even for Howell Mountain, and the vines must bust through the rocky soils in search of moisture. The winery refers to these wines as "blood from the stones" for a reason.

Candlestick Ridge is the northernmost vineyard in the Howell Mountain AVA and is at a slightly warmer location than the summit where the Estate vineyard is planted.

The vineyard's macroclimate is influenced by warm air from Pope Valley to the east and, at its slightly lower elevation, it has protection from the constant winds that hit the ridge line. The soils here are definitive Howell Mountain - thin tufa (rock of volcanic ash) soil on top of a rocky volcanic bedrock.  These miserly soils force the vines' roots to drill down deep in search of moisture and nutrients.  This stress contributes to very small crop loads, in 2016 only 1.8 tons per acre, and very intense fruit.  Candlestick Ridge Vineyard is not only one of the greatest vineyard sites on Howell Mountain, it is truly singular in the world.

The 2016 is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot.  It spent 18 months in French oak barriques. 80% were new, 20% were second fill. It was bottled unfiltered and unfined.  Only 1800 cases were produced.

"Tasted as a barrel sample, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is another pure, elegant, classic wine from this estate. Blueberries, tobacco leaf, forest floor and underbrush notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied beauty that has ripe tannin, notable freshness, and again, awesome purity of fruit."

"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain) is going to need at least a few years to come into its own, as the tannins are pretty fierce at this stage. Tightly wound and packed, the 2016 is full of energy. Raspberry jam, iron, dried flowers red flowers, mint and white pepper all help give the 2016 a decidedly high-toned profile, but it is the wine's energy and sense of drive that stand out most."
