Last weekend I was on a mini vacation with my husband Toby and my dog LD. We had the best time, but I must tell you, the Holy Spirit conspired to help me make sure I also had a restful time. Before we left, I had all my stuff laid out for the trip. I had all my clothes, all the dog stuff and all the work things I was going to do. You see, I had planned that I was going to do a great deal of work on my vacation. Just before it was time to leave, I looked at my computer charger, that was still plugged into the wall, and said to myself that I must remember to unplug it and bring it along. However, I became distracted and somehow the charger never made it into my stuff. My husband arrived home, we loaded the truck with all our baggage and LD and off we went. I happily went on down the road clicking away at the keyboard of my computer, working on some last-minute stuff for work. Then I noticed that my battery was at about 60% and it hit me, I never put my charger in my bag! That was it, I was going to be forced to spend four whole days relaxing.

I think the Holy Spirit conspired with my subconscious to help me have the long weekend that I really needed. Did I need to spend my vacation working? No. Did I need to spend my vacation resting? Yes. I think we all need those times in our life when the Holy Spirit conspires against us to make us rest. To make us sit back and watch the world go by. To make us go on long walks. To make us bake cookies. To make us watch the sunset. To make us take long naps in the middle of the day. To make us sit on the front porch drinking coffee in the morning, watching the world wake up. To make us be still in the presence of God. Have you taken a break lately? We all have plenty of things we can be doing, but it is good to slow down and to let those things sit for a few days and to just be still.

Blessing on your quest to be still,
Couch Talk
Each week the pastors and sometimes staff members record a segment called couch talk. Couch talk is full of useful announcements for the coming weeks. We hope you take a moment each week to watch.

Our couch talk is always linked on our  Facebook  page & our  YouTube  page.
Dear Lake Deaton Family,

Pastors Kristyne, Loida and Jim would like to thank all of our Lake Deaton community for your expressions of love during October’s Pastor Appreciation Month.

We have been overwhelmed with the many cards and gifts that we have received and feel blessed beyond measure. We each feel blessed to be part of such a caring community and times such as this last month exemplify the love that we see within the Lake Deaton family at a personal level.

Again, thank you so much for your signs of love and support.
Volunteer Highlight

Get to know: Bob Heit, servant

Bob Heit has been active in Lake Deaton UMC since its inception, in the Fall of 2013. He has been a Lead Usher since that time. When we were the Lake Deaton Campus of New Covenant UMC, Bob served on the SLDT (Nominating Committee), SALT (Church Council) and the Finance Team. Bob was a member of the Building Committee and was the first Lay Leader under New Covenant. At present, he serves as a Lead Usher and is a member of Staff Parish Relations Team (SPRT).

Bob led a small group for over four years. He and wife, Hannah came here from Michigan and live in the Village of Gilchrist.

Besides loving the game of golf, he enjoys working jigsaw puzzles and playing all kinds of card games.
Outreach
Which one of these flower beds need to be weeded and cleaned?
If you answered “ALL of the above,” you are correct. We are in the process of recruiting groups of people who would be willing to adopt a LDUMC flower bed that would initially need to be cleaned and weeded, for eventual beatification this spring. The groups can be made up of couples, small groups, ministry teams, ladies groups, men’s groups and even individuals.

Here’s where we need you: We are asking that each group sign up to take one flower bed and within the next month weed the bed and put pine straw (which will be provided) down over your bed.

If you or your group would be interested in adopting a flower bed on the LDUMC grounds please respond to this post by calling the church office or clicking here to send an email and we will be in touch with you shortly.
The Gift That Keeps Giving
As we prepare to experience again the coming of Jesus this Christmas season, we encourage you to think about alternative ways to gift your family and friends. With so many people hurting locally, regionally, and globally, what better way to celebrate God’s love than through alternative gift giving. There are two programs through Lake Deaton for your consideration.

Christmas Wish Tree - this year, our Lake Deaton Church family will be supporting the Self-Sufficiency Program at the Wildwood Resource Center. Through a series of classes and individual coaching, women with children who are unemployed and even homeless are given the tools to help them break the cycle of poverty and become self-sufficient. This is truly a “hand up” and not a “hand out”. Our own Helping Hands ministry uses this program for all applicants for their reconstructed houses.

Because of the pandemic and safety concerns, we are unable to participate in the purchasing of gifts for children in the Wildwood area. The Resource Center asked us to consider supporting the Self-Sufficiency Program instead and, after seeing the difference it is making in the lives of people like Shasa and Thomasina, we knew this is what God was calling us to do. Make a contribution and we’ll provide a card you can use to give someone for Christmas! Hang one of the beautiful ornaments on your tree made by Catherine and Denny Dugay, coordinators of Christmas Wish Tree.

Let’s Join Together This Advent Season For a Special Devotional!

Advent is a season to prepare our hearts, minds and souls for the coming of Christ. This year, let’s be sure we don’t rush through this special time. Let’s slow down and enjoy our time together while our staff and congregation spend time "Sharing our Stories".

Each day during Advent, starting on Sunday, November, 29, you will receive an email devotion directly in your email inbox. Each devotion is written by staff or a member of the congregation. Along with the devotion you will have a scripture to read, a few discussion questions for you to consider on your own or with loved ones (even your Small Group) and a prayer for the day.

Our prayer is that this Advent Devotional is a blessing to you as you prepare for the coming of Christ. Click here to sign up!
We Miss Seeing You!
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Join us on Wednesday, November, 18 from 9:30 to 11:00, as we start looking ahead to Christmas with Operation We Miss You: It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas!

We invite you to drive-thru in either your car or golf cart as we take some time to spread some holiday cheer and catch up with each other. As a bonus will have directions for you on how to create a special Advent Jars at home. You and your family will be able to use these Advent Jars in the same way we use our advent candles on the weekend.  We also invite you to participate in the spirit of giving by considering giving some of your used books and Bible to the residents at the Sumter County Detention Center. Reading is a favorite activity and one that can safely be done during the pandemic. Check your bookcases for paperback Bibles and other spiritually enriching books. Books on recovering from addiction are also much needed, along with any other stories of recovery or hope.
Join us for movies on the lawn starting Wednesday, November 25 at 6pm. Each Wednesday we will be showing a special Christmas movie. We invite you to bring your lawn chair, a blanket and a friend for this fun, weekly event. You can also watch from the comfort of your car or golf cart.

Travel with Us
As we anticipate coming out of COVID-19 this next year we have scheduled two opportunities to get back into international travel as well as provide excellent educational opportunities to grow in our faith.

In the October of 2021 we will be hosting a trip to Israel and in August 2022 a trip to the Oberammergau Passion Play and Italy. These trips will be great ways to learn and grow in our faith while experiencing the beauty of the Holy Land, Germany and Italy.

We hope to have large groups of people on each of these trips, that we can enjoy the company of our community, while growing from the rich heritage of the Holy Land in 2021 and Southern Europe in 2022. Both of these excursions have the potential to be spiritual pilgrimages for those who go.

We will also be having three informational meetings if you have questions or would like to know more about these opportunities, Holy Land Classic Tour or Oberammergau Passion Play/Best of Italy Tour

Join us on either November 18 @ 3pm, December 10 @ 4pm or December
15 @ 5pm in CR1. You can also check out the link below to find out
more about these exciting trips! Click here for more information.

Life is Better at the Lake...

Bloom… Live With a Different Look
November 10th @ 10 am

Ladies please mark your calendar for our next Bloom…Live
“Life is Better at The Lake” as we gather differently than the past couple of months.

We will have the large round tables set up with only 3 chairs (approximately 5 feet apart) at each table. We require that you still keep your face mask on during this time, but you will be able to safely talk and connect. This will be more like our past luncheons without food, but lots of safe fellowship.

This will also be streaming live on Facebook, YouTube and our website for anyone that cannot come in person.

There is no fee, however we ask that you register here if attending in person.

We look forward to seeing you there as we celebrate and Give Thanks to God for our Blessings.

Fun and Easy!
Ladies….if you like to sew we have a fun and easy project for you.

We would like to have some basic biblical costumes for Lake Deaton to use for a variety of programs in the future. We have the patterns and will provide the fabric, we just need your talents in creating them.

If anyone has scarves, belts or any other biblical costume type of accessory that you are willing to donate, that would be great.

Please email info@lakedeatonumc.com if you are interested in helping.

We believe that meeting the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of our church and neighbors is what showing the love of Christ is all about. We have volunteers devoted to the care of persons, including ministries of prayer, meals, and member connection. If you are facing a challenge, have a prayer request, or want to serve as a volunteer, please let us know. In case of a death of a loved one or a hospitalization, let us know so a Care Minister can support you through this time.

We are now able to visit congregants in the hospital!
Please let us know by calling the Care Department when you, a relative or a friend is in the hospital. We will schedule a visit from one of our pastoral team.
