Join the Chamber Energy Purchasing Cooperative

September 6 - October 1

There is no better time for members to enroll in the Chamber Energy Purchasing Cooperative Program and gain price stability, budget control and peace-of-mind.

The Dorchester Chamber of Commerce has partnered with nationally recognized energy management experts, CQI Associates, to administer and manage the Chamber Energy Purchasing Cooperative. Competitive rates are obtained by leveraging aggregated usage from members of 23 Chambers of Commerce. The group purchasing power allows members to receive lower rates than they could typically attain on their own.
Since 2004, the Cooperative electricity rates have been lower than both market rates and the weighted annual utility standard offer service rates. During our previous campaigns, participants saw an average annual savings of $4,000. Natural gas rates were also lower on average than market rates and utility monthly winter peak indexed rates.

TAKE ACTION! REGISTER NOW in the current campaign which runs from September 6, 2021 to October 1, 2021.

To learn more about the purchasing cooperative simply watch this short video.

If you have any questions or require additional details, please contact Joe Tabeling with CQI Associates at joe@cqiassociates.com or 443-472-3870.

Mid-Shore Pro Bono Launches Life Planning for All
EASTON — Mid-Shore Pro Bono, a non-profit organization on Maryland’s Eastern Shore that provides free access to legal services to low-income community members, has launched “Life Planning For All,” an initiative to assist local families with legal, financial and health care directives, at no charge.
“I was introduced to Mid-Shore Pro Bono when my mother needed help drafting her power of attorney and advance directive,” said Talbot County resident Cheryl Bowens. “I honestly didn’t really want to think about it, but knew my husband and I needed to do the same.”
“I called MSPB and after a quick phone survey, they got back to me within a couple days to schedule an appointment,” Bowens said. “The process was seamless and because of the great experience we had with the attorney we worked with, we recommended MSPB to our friends.”

Black Smoke and White Water
TAYLORS ISLAND — Black smoke and white water came to Slaughter Creek Marina on Sunday as hundreds gathered to watch watermen in a boat docking competition.
All proceeds from the 10th annual event on Aug. 29 went to the Taylors Island Volunteer Fire Company.
The contest involves boat captains pulling out from one dock slip, turning around in the marina, backing into another slip and throwing lines with hoops onto pilings. The boat with the fastest time in each category wins.
Derrick Hoy in Crusher won the small boats category, Will Watkins in No Smoke won the medium boats division, and John Ashton in Miss Julie won the large boats category.

Choptank Heritage Skipjack Race Set for Sept. 25
CAMBRIDGE — The best preserved and most active skipjacks will gather in Cambridge on Sept. 25 for the 25th annual Choptank Heritage Skipjack Race. The race is sponsored by the Dorchester Skipjack Committee and hosted by the skipjack Nathan of Dorchester. At one time over 100 working sail powered dredge boats; pungys, bugeyes, sloops, schooners, and skipjacks of all sizes would gather for informal races in every port from Havre de Grace to Solomons and Deal Island.
Today fewer than 30 skipjacks survive out of a fleet that once numbered close to 900 boats. Of those boats still afloat, many seldom venture from their dock and raise their sails only under ideal conditions. The race in Cambridge provides an excellent opportunity to see most surviving traditional Skipjacks up close and under sail as they race on the Choptank River.

A Cancer Patient Making a Difference, One Shirt at a Time
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – “To do this, is bigger than me, so it has to be done,” says Ty Wongus, owner and creator of PortLife T-shirts.
One cancer patient is making a difference, one shirt at a time. More specifically, her homemade PortLife T-shirts. A shirt designed for cancer patients who have a port in their chest; making chemotherapy sessions, easier, and more comfortable. “I’m allowing people to make life a little bit easier, making cancer a little bit more fashionable, allowing people to feel a little better. You look good you feel better, that’s it,” says Wongus.

Smithsonian Poster Exhibition Highlighting the History of Women Inventors in the U.S at DCA
Throughout American history, women with diverse backgrounds and interests created inventions that changed lives every day. But women haven’t always had equal opportunities to be inventors or received as much recognition. The Smithsonian and the United States Patent and Trademark Office present “Picturing Women Inventors,” a poster exhibition that explores the inventions of 19 highly accomplished American women. Astronauts, computer pioneers, and businesswomen join athletes, engineers, and even teenagers in this remarkable group of inventors. This poster exhibition was designed to educate and inspire young people to see themselves as future inventors. The posters will be on view at DCA through September 25.

A Day of Remembrance

The Arc Central Chesapeake Region (The Arc), a nonprofit committed to transforming lives for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), and its partners, For All Seasons, The Avalon Theater, and the Talbot Department of Emergency Services, supported by the Town of Easton, invite the community to a Day of Remembrance in commemoration of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The organization will join hundreds of others across the community in turning a day of tragedy into a day of support and hope.
The Day of Remembrance event will pay tribute to the individuals lost and injured in the attacks, as well as honor the first responders and the many others who have risen in service to support their community members. This event is the final event in a series of activities that focused on awareness of how community members can support each other during a crisis. The events also focused on emergency preparedness, sharing strategies that ensure that vulnerable populations can receive the help they need should calamity strike. Our activities were inclusive of people of all abilities, including children and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Community members are invited to come share in this event, including a video display of the summer’s activities. Following the ceremony, light refreshments will be offered.

The Day of Remembrance ceremony will feature Beth Ann Langrell, executive director of For All Seasons, who will speak on her personal connection to that tragic day twenty years ago, as well as discuss what services and supports a community like ours can offer each other in times of crisis.

Annual Ham and Crabcake Dinner

Many folks have been inquiring as to whether the annual dinner will be held. Due to the incredibly high cost of crabs this year (double what we normally pay), we discussed our options at our monthly meeting last week. We have decided to continue our tradition with a few minor changes.

The dinner will be held on Sunday September 12th beginning at noon. The price will be $25 this year.  We WILL NOT have any preordering this year, so this will be first come first serve. We are planning for 250 dinners which is comparable to last year's service. Also like last year we will be doing drive thru only. The menu will be the same as always with crab cakes, ham, homemade potato salad, green beans, beets and a dinner roll. We will be offering fewer but larger crab cakes with the dinners.

The decision to go forward with the dinner was based on our long standing tradition as well as the fact we depend on this event as a major fundraiser. Please help us sell out of our 250 dinners. This is far fewer than we normally serve so it shouldn't be a difficult task.

A number of folks have also inquired about the New Year's Eve Party. It is in the planning stages and we expect to be even better than the previous. Stay tuned for more info.

Ironman Maryland 2021

We Are Crabbies
At IRONMAN Maryland, race day does not make us individuals that are competing against ourselves. When we toe the line, we become a team of athletes that join forces to overcome whatever challenges race day brings. We are allies that stick by each other and offer words of encouragement. And most of all, we are a community of finishers who are grateful to experience the comradery of Crabby Nation year after year.

We are Crabbies and this is Crabby Nation.
Embrace the journey to becoming an IRONMAN. Embrace the journey to becoming a Crabby.
