Making the Rounds with Founding Dean Dr. Barbara Atkinson
 Issue 125 - December 26th, 2017
CONGRATULATIONS AND HOLIDAY GREETINGS
Congratulations and Holiday Greetings from the Community Engagement Board,

This group of extremely successful community leaders helped guide the UNLV School of Medicine through its formative days. We call upon them frequently for their sage advice and support. They generously attend quarterly meetings and provide important feedback because they believe in our mission to improve the quality of healthcare in Southern Nevada.

They are physicians, educators, and executive level business people who know what it takes to succeed. Many of them have struggled to get where they are today. All of them have a personal interest in the success of our students. So as we break for the holidays, they send their congratulations to our charter class for successfully reaching the halfway mark in year one of medical school.

“If I could reach out and hug each one of you…I would. Congratulations on making it to the midway point of your first year of medical school. We are extremely proud of you. Thank you for your remarkable efforts and energy. Enjoy the holidays, and we look forward to you coming back refreshed and renewed in the New Year.”  - Founding Dean, Barbara Atkinson, M.D., UNLV School of Medicine

“Congratulations to the first class of the UNLV School of Medicine on the successful completion of the first half of your year. Wishing you all a very happy and joyful holiday season. May your New Year be full of blessings, health, happiness and prosperity.” - Chair, Ikram Khan, M.D., Community Engagement Board, President, Quality Care Consultants, L.L.C.

“Dear UNLV Medical Students (Class of 2021), congratulations on your successes to date. As you all know you are making history at UNLV as well as in Nevada. The medical school is not only changing your lives forever, but the face of healthcare for all of that patients that you touch. Enjoy the holidays and happy New Year!” - Vice Chair, K. Warren Volker, M.D., Community Engagement Board, Chairman and CEO, WellHealth Quality Care

“First year class, we are thrilled with the progress you are making - both for what it means for you and what it means for Las Vegas and Nevada. Enjoy the holidays with the knowledge that we embrace your life choice and look forward to working with you in the future.”  - Director, Jeffrey Cummings, M.D., Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health

“First year class: You have made us proud and grateful - proud of you for accepting the promise of a new medical school; grateful for your contributions to make this inaugural class such high quality and full of promise. Best wishes for a wonderful Holiday and, hopefully, a little relaxation to prepare you for what lies ahead when you return from your break.” - Presidential Advisor for Strategic Initiatives, Don Snyder, UNLV

“When Nevada State College students ask me for advice about their medical school applications, I recommend that they meet all of you to connect with the “why” in becoming a doctor. This was so clear when I had the opportunity to meet a number of you at the White Coat Ceremony. Congratulations on reaching this midway point milestone in your first year! Remember your “why” and celebrate a well-deserved holiday!!!” - Dean, Andy Kuniyuki, Ph.D., School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Nevada State College

“I want to tell a story to the class: At this juncture in medical school I decided to drop out. I was tired of the rote memorization and lack of human contact. My anatomy partner recognized my depressed mood. He told me “you are not going to quit. Here is the reason why I went to a party where I saw a guy with a medical school alumni ring on his hand. My friend said to me ‘You will graduate with me so that we can get one of those rings.’ I am eternally grateful to Dr. Brian Fuller. We both graduated and neither one of us purchased the alumni ring. Hang in there. The destination is worth the journey.” - Chief of Staff, Ramu Komanduri, M.D., VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System

“Sending warm wishes and congratulations to all those students completing their first semester of medical school with UNLV School of Medicine. While the road ahead may be long, all things seem impossible until they are done. Celebrate your accomplishments and we look forward to seeing you all put your stethoscopes to use as future medical professionals.”  - Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Constantine George, M.D., EPITOMEDICAL
